This is just my theory, of course, but I thought it'd make for good conversation...Everytime I look at an I30 or I35, I can't help but feel that that's the car I was originally supposed to be driving. That is until Nissan changed their mind and revealed the 5th gen we have today as the new Maxima; and made the new "I" an Infiniti instead. My theory stems from the fact that the I30/35 look a bit like a 4th gen at the back, even though not so much at the front. I guess Nissan thought that the (now) I30/35 wasn't radical enough in design to be touted the new Maxima, so they switched it up.
I'm thinking that the 5th gen body we have here in the US was originally planned to be introduced as an Infiniti and vice versa with the actual I30/35 we have today in the US; but Nissan felt that the design of the (now) I30/35 wasn't different enough, so they instead used the curvier and more European look of the 5th gen we have today.
Just my two cents. :P

I might buy that, if not for the fact that the A32 USDM Maxima body was found only in the US (just like the A33 USDM Maxima). And that the A32 I30 was found all over the rest of the world (just like the A33 I30/I35).

The rear end of a I30/35 resembles to a much greater extent that of a Mazda Millenia than that of a 4th gen. It's all pure BS coincidence. I really don't see how the US Maxima was meant to be an Infiniti when the Infiniti elsewhere was called a Maxima like someone already pointed out.
The 5th gen US Maxima was designed by NDI (Jerry Hershberger's team). It was intended to be a US Maxima. They wanted to step away from the muted design of the 4th gen and give everyone something agressive and impressive to drive. If you watch the video that came with the car, it pretty much states that throughout. Also, I talked to some of the executives and they said that they originally wanted to do with the 5th gen what they did for the 6th gen. They didn't have the money so just used the same platform. Aside from the muffler and the rear shocks if you put a 99 and 2000 on a lift and looked up, you might not be able to tell which is which.
