Scary thing happened on the highway. Ideas?

Cliff Notes:
1) Transmission acted funny
2) Car stalled while going 30 on the freeway
3) Came to complete stop on the freeway
4) Transmission wouldn't budge
5) Car started only after several tries.
6) Need your help in trying to figure out what happened

Complete story:
I was in slow moving traffic today and for some odd reason everytime i got on the gas after letting it go (e.g. cruising) the car would hesitate a second, downshift to 1st (i have an auto) and obviously surge forward.

This happened about 7 times or so. Traffic then started moving and i was cruising about 30mph when all of a sudden the engine stopped and from what i remember a number of lights on the dash ligthed up!

So here i was on the freeway with no power and cars zipping by as i was slowing down.

I immediately put on my hazards and slowly went to a stop - people honking by and such. I immediately tried to put it back in "P" but it wouldn't budge. I got it to "N" and tried a total of 4 times before the car would even try to start - prior to that it would just sit there as if all the electronics went dead.

Finally i got the car started, and just in time - a big rig was right on my tail!

Anyone have any ideas on what could have happened? I remember a recall on a certain part that could fail and cause this - but i had that recall done several months ago.

Crank/cam position sensor. If your still under warranty, take it to dealer and let them check it out.

Hmm.. that sounds like what i just had replaced under the recall <g> I"ll definitely have it checked... makes me wonder if the dealership actually replaced the part...

Thanks for the response!

UH OH! I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ME TOO.
Let us know what it turns out to be soundmike.

i had a P1320 code thrown out about 2 months ago.

Took it to the mechanic, he changed the ignition relay.

Code thrown out again.

He said try changing the "Crank/cam position sensor."

instead i changed all 6 ignition coils after seeing the TSB on it.

no problem for 2 months now. *knock on wood*

Should i be scared he wanted to change the crank/cam position sensor or did he not know what to change because he wasn't sure what the P1320 code actual was?

Was there a major recall on the crank/cam pos. sensor? I have a 2000 gle.

thanks
