Lowering Max question

When lowering the max do I need to get new shocks and struts or just the springs work?

Also where is a good place to get them?

You do not need new struts but it would be better to change it all at once. It's your choice.

If you go with a smaller drop (H&R, Maxspeeds, Eibachs) you probably won't need to replace the SE struts. I'm pretty sure handling won't be AS good as with AM struts but still better than now. If you go lower, I'd recommend new struts as well since these will most likely blow in a couple of months and you'll have to pay for installation twice.

check the classified and GD sections. There might be a group deal for Maxspeeds

Doesn't that also depend on how many miles the car has? Meaning if the stock struts are still new, you could run let's say Maxspeeds or H&Rs without upgrading them but after a certain mileage you're going to need aftermarket struts.

And also, anyone with a GXE/GLE that has dropped their Max? If Maxspeed give the closest ride to "stock" and what you consider "stock" is the SE suspension, then that would be very harsh on us the GLE-spoiled...

www.southwestautoworks.com usually has good deals. Call them & ask for Steve.

As for your struts, honetly id change em. As mention be4 if you go with a mild drop its not really necessary, but if you get something like Eibachs, Sprints, or TEIN (each one is lower, in that order)

You'd definetly want to change the struts out as well. The OEM struts just dont have enough dampening force to properly control the spring and will result in a really bouncy ride.
At that point you're going to get fed up & order struts anyway and either do the labor all over again, or pay some1 to do it the 2nd time.

Just do it right the 1st time, get both.

i was thinking of getting the Tein high techs, and those dont give much of a drop but would it be better just to go with coilovers rather than spend money on struts, springs, shocks which would prob go the same way moneywise

It's a simple swap....I don't mind doing it at all.....

Since i just put in Tein S-Techs with stock struts, I feel like I wanna drop more Maximas myself.....It's so easy....why pay $200+ ?

I knew nothing of how to do it and it's self explanatory. It was easy.

If I lived close to NJ, you would be the chosen one to lower my Max...

i put maxspeeds on my 2k over a year ago with stock struts (52k miles on my GXE now). no problems to date. i didn't see the need to waste the money on shocks until i needed them. i'll get GR2s when they blow.

no one can tell you how long stock shocks will run with lowering springs. i've heard of guys lowering on stocks and only lasting a few days. might last a year or more like mine though.

i installed myself...so no worries of losing money with 2 intalls. install was very easy. i've got a how-to here if interested:
www.kevinfisher.net/web_server/maxima/springs

got my maxspeeds on ebay for like $66! can't beat that deal! they ride about the closed to stock you can get. it is harder and bumper for sure...but not too bad at all.

drop is not as much as other springs...but all i needed. looks a ton better. check my homepage for pics.

very close to stock. on the highway it bottoms out a little. H&R's are nice also. I would go with H7R's next time...

You honestly mean to tell me & every1 on this board that switching to Teins S.Techs spring and keeping the OEM struts you dont notice a difference in the ride?
Comon man. Either you weigh 400lbs and have a nice cusion on that *** or its a bit bouncy Dont get me wrong here man, in more trying to insult you or nothing, but just trying to make a point. The OEM struts just dont have the dampening force necessary to control the rebound of springs such as the S.techs. That is why it bounces more then necessary, the struts arnt strong enough to control it 100%.
Sooner or later they will blow out, its inevitable...most of the time its sooner then later. The only time people can get away with keeping the OEM struts is be getting springs such as the Maxspeeds, or H&R's. Both obviously provide very little drop, but whatever thats the owners choice. They are the most comforable springs, ill give em that much.
Btw- why does it say Tok Blues in your sig if your riding OEM just wondering.

dba1999us: The bottoming out issue, thats just weird. When you say bottoming out, do you mean the car itself scrapes? or the springs bind all the way and the suspension reaches full travel? Most likely you mean the latter, just making sure

I did my springs first; Progress performance coil overs. Left the stock struts on. Yikes!!!! Felt awful. Like I had no struts at all. Went and got the KYB adjustables and now she handles great. Have popping noise on bumps though.

Ive been in a car with that setup be4...actually, we cut to springs a coil too, but when all was said & done the ride wasnt bad at all. Not boucey, a little stiff (not as stiff as S.techs) but pretty decent. So if it was at that point w/ a coil cut off (which btw I dont recommend) im sure you'll be more then happy with it as is. That is until you want to go lower anyway
