No, not an air filter in the engine. It's behind the glove box. You can always wash the filter to save yourself some money.

It's the in-cabin filter... behind the glove box. Nissan wants $130 to replace it, and I have the step-by-step directions to do it myself. It looks really easy. I just need to figure out if I should try to buy it from the dealer or shop around online. I checked ebay, but that turn up empry. I can get it through Courtesy Nissan for around $50. anything lower than that would be helpful.

thanks everyone!

kryplex, if you decide to buy it check if yours is a two piece or just a single filter. i wanted to replace mine, and all i could buy at my local dealers is a two small filters that you supposed to put together.
does anyone know where i could get the single filter?

I replaced mine at about 15K miles, the one i took out was a one peice design, but the one i bought from the Nissan dealer (45$) was the two piece design. The difference is that the washable (1 piece) filter does not have the carbon in it that the 2 piece does. Carbon filter is supposed to also remove odors from the air entering the cabin through the vents and also looks alot more sturdy than the washable. Install was very easy 10 min. job.

So, when you put the two together there was no space in between the two? I tried to do it at the dealer's, but no matter how I put the two together there wasn't a good seal between them.

I replaced my cabin air filter in April of this year and damn was that thing dirty....I bought the car a year ago and the filter had so much dirt on it. The filter is pretty easy to change by yourself. I bought the filter from Nissan for $27.00 and it took me about 20min to do. Had to call MannyNJ2k2max a time or two just to make sure I was doing it right...But its pretty easy...

The 2 pieces have have notches on the connecting surfaces. When you put them together (slide the two together to lock in) they make a good connection and should seal good. Hope this helps.

How-To:
http://www.innerbean.com/housecor/cabin_filter.html

Ive yet to do it myself though... maybe next week before i go back to school. Seems simple.

Reminder: Factory installed is cleanable, aftermarket is not.
(Dont know why... you would think the aftermarket is better like a K/N air filter that is washable.)

don't wash, just buy a new one....which are all the carbon type....washing the filter turns it to crap!

Dealers usally stock this item and reatil for about $40-$60...install is simple follow housecor's instructions....

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE CLIP!!!!....SQUEEZE THE BACK OF THE PLASTIC CLIP TO REMOVE GLOVE BOX!!!...

But even if it turns the "filter to crap" it probably works just the same right? i mean it is hidden behind your glovebox. being that its free, i see no harm in just washing it
