Ignition coil problems

After doing a search on google, I've been able to determine that this is a somewhat systemic problem so I appologize if this topic has come up brfore.

I only have 43,000 on my 2000 Maxima and my "service engine soon" light has just come on. This happened before at 22,000 miles and the dealer ended up replacing all 6 colis under warrantee. I became a bit scared when I was told that "these won't be covered under warrantee the next time"; obviously implying that they expected to see me back at some point.

Well the light has come on again and I took it down to Auto-zone for a free diagnostic and sure enough the code was "misfire or ignition problem". I had 2 instances of it so it did not identify which piston was effected.

Any ideas on how to fix this long term? Do the 2001 coils work in the 2000? They have a different part number and cost about 10% more so there must be some difference???? It does not appear that the 2001 has the same problem that the 2000 does.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Jeff

Best proper fix is to replace all 6 coils.

Ok for starters, if the car is still under Warranty, they cannot deny you the free repair JUST because they fixed it before.

If there is a problem, that is a usual warranty issue, they have no choice but to honor it. Now, they could also have done the car long before the TSB was released and the new coils made. The coils now are different than the original from what I remember.

I do not know about the 01 Coils. Do you need diff plugs with those?

Unfortunately the car is no longer under warranty. When they repaired it the first time I only had 1 month left on the warranty; that was 18 months ago.

Mind you: Powertrain is 5yr/60,000 miles. I don't understand how you'd be out of warranty 18 months ago. 18 months ago would still have you under the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty.

Powertrain covers absolutely nothing, especially not ignition coils.
