Removal Of Tint from Windows

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for removing tint from the front windows? I got mine done on my 2000 about a year ago and the cops are a pain in the *** now. May be Deciding to take it off...What you guys think?

I did my friends G35c front windows a few weeks ago for the same reason (cops). i just left the car in the sun for an hour and let the windows heat up. Then i took a razor and pealed a piece of the tint off the window in the upper corner. I took that little piece I seperated off the window and pulled the rest of the tint off in one piece. The hardest part is getting off the glue...I used a wide razor and some windex. It took about an hour and half to do...The actual taking off of the film only took me 3-5min per side, its the damn glue that takes the longest....THAT DAMN GLUE!!! LOL

One of the best ways I've found to get the glue off of the windows is by using a combination of rubbing alcohol mixted with water (60/40 mix) and #0000 steel wool. Now, I know you're thinking the steel wool will scratch your windows, but, it doesn't. It's actually a REALLY good way to clean your windshield using the same process.

You'll probably need the razor blade for the large gobs of glue, but, the steel wool works wonders on the residual.

Best way to do it is 'sweat it off'.

Pick a nice hot sunny day. Cut open a few black trashbags and cut pieces to fit each individual window. Then spray the inside of each glass with an ammonia-based window cleaner or even 409. Immediately cover up the sprayed glass with the black plastic and let the car sit out in the sun. You will probably have to completely remove the tint from one side of the car....then turn it around into the sun and repeat the process on the other side.

Respray the glasses about every 30-40mins for about 2-3 hours. Try not to let the window cleaner dry completely out.

While the glass is still hot and wet take your fignernail, razor, anything sharp and pic one of the corners up, until you can get a nice solid grip. Slowly pull the film off the glass and the majority of the time it will leave very little glue behind. The older the film is the less chance this 'trick' will work as well but being that your windows were done in '00 it should work fairly well.

Any glue left behind can be softened with an ammonia-based window cleaner and scraped off with a single edge razor or a larger one if you prefer....(except the rear glass of course...don't want to run a razor over the rear defroster lines).

Hope that helps...

i have never tried stripping tints but for the glue i would suggest using "goo gone". That stuff works wonders on a lot of things and wont stink up your car. Its worth a try...you can find it at a lot of hardware stores and even some grocery stores. Good luck
