ECU reflash ?

I called a few stealerships and got two different answers. The first said no problem and it will run about $38. The second says I need to replace all the o2 sensors or it wont work and said it would be about $500. I never heard of anyone else replacing there o2's just to get a reflash but i just wanted to be sure. I'm getting the reflash because of the encificant emision device codes 420 and 430. I guess its a common problem for the 00 max. Thankx for any advice.

I wanted to get a ECU reflash. Kings nissan said, no problem, its a 2 hour job, 190 dollars. Bay Ridge nissan said, no problem, its a 1 hour job, but we have to make you new keys, 120 dollars. SI nissan said, we wont do it. I went to Bay Ridge, got the car back untouched minus 125 bucks. I checked with my scantool. After I confronted them, they claimed they couldnt do anything if there was no error code. Point is, its not something you can easily check if it was done, so if nissan doesnt cover them for it(reflashing with no codes), its likely they will try to weasel out of it.

BTW, which dealer****s did you talk to?

you can disconnect the battery for a few hours but the SES will come back, you have to fix the stupid O2 sensors like in my car...but I like the way the Yellow SES light looks.......just kidding..... I'm used to it

I hope you are not saying that reflashing and resetting is the same thing. Cause it's not, I am sick and tired people thinking its the same thing.

Reflashing the ECU should be no more than .7 hours labor.

If you dont have a SES and have a 00 you can ask to have it reflashed for the fuel cut TSB. That way you are not roped into the crap of O2's. Nissan plays a LOT of games with the O2 part of their emmisions.

Looking at it this way, if you are willing to pay .7 * 1 hour cost of labor, why would they turn you away.

IF you trust your dealership and have them do it, get the MODEL number pre and post ECU flash. The ECU "version" is part of the model number and is printed out on the the ODBII tool print out.

There is NOTHING required for a reflash OTHER than reprogrammer the ECU. No keys, no blinker fluid...NOTHING. Just .7 * 1 hour labor cost to complete the task.

IF you have a CEL that points to a problem, they play games on what is "required" to fix the problem.

I told the first dealership i wanted a reflash because I put in a new maf sensor. And they were the ones more helpfull and cheap, but they also said they wouldnt do it on the weekend incase there is a problem. I asked why would there be a problem and they said once on a while they have something come up and dont want to see me with out my car. I was just thinking there playing the game with me and then trying to say i need some blinker fluid lol. I have one more dealership to call tomorrow and ill just tell them the line about the fuel cut and see what happens. Not to sound too retarded but what exactly is a fuel cut? Is like a govener of sorts to shut the car down at high speeds? thanks again for all the help.

Thats exactly why I wanted the ECU reflash! I got a new MAF at Bay Ridge Nissan. They did not reflash my ECU because, get this, "we cannot update your ECU if there is no error code. - But there was an error code! MAF failed, ECU threw the code, and thats why you replaced it! - Yes, but we reset the ECU and there is no code now, and we cannot update your ECU because there is no error code. - But...!"

Could you please reveal which Stealership was nice to you and agreed to reflash your ECU?(was it Westbury?)

They won't reflash on Nissans' dime withOUT a check engine light stored. Unless there is a STRICT procedure followed, they don't get paid.

You can *ATTEMPT* to get it covered under the 80K mile emissions warranty, however they'll try and stick you for the cost of two new 02-sensors and labor to install them since only the ECU is covered, ie reprogramming. They may even try and stick you with the $90 diagnosis fee.

Honestly, your best bet is to buy two new rear 02-sensors from DAVEB and install them yourself. Then go to the dealer and pay then for the TSB quoted 0.7hrs and tell them to *** off on the diagnosis fee, just do the TSB flash morons. Depending on your mileage the 02-sensors are probably fine, but the cat is getting old and the ECU is too picky. The new TSB flash will just desensitize the ECU and you'll be good.

Luckily for 2001s, the TechnoSquare reflash will include the latest TSB fix.

The nicer stealership was amory nissan in albany. It would probly be a little drive for you. The main reason for the reflash is soo i dont have to worrry about the ses when its time for the inspection next month. But I'll probly just unhook the battery for a few before i give them the car if I dont get get the issue solved before then. I was also wondering if i moved the the rear two o2 sensors to behind the main cat. if that would be of any help. Or possibly an o2 simulator?

Here is the procedure for getting codes from the ECU then resetting the SES light. I used this last night to reset an O2 related code in my ECU.

Turn the ignition key on without starting the car
Wait 3 seconds
Quickly floor and release the gas pedal five times
Wait 7 second
Floor the gas pedal and hold for 10 seconds

At this point the SES light should start flashing the error codes in the ECU. Slow flashes for the first digit, then faster flashes for the remaining three digits. Ten flashes denotes a zero.

Once you have the codes recorded, floor the gas pedal again for another 10+ seconds.

The ECU will erase the codes it has in memory and the SES light will go out until the ECU sees another problem.

Is there a write up and what each code represents?

Once TechnoSquare finishes their ECU and it's made available, their performance ECU flash will include the 02-sensor TSB fix. Larrio the guinea pig had that TSB when his ECU code was downloaded by TS, so it will end up in the final version.
