nissan hasnt learnt about the paint
I have a 2001 SE and i can see rust spots on the trunk face...dealer tells me that it's brake dust corroding the paint and it's not covered under warranty...
So one of my friend who works as a service advisor showed me a demo 2005 Maxima with the same rust spots!!!! I mean, nissan used crappy paint in their 5th gens and people have complained...but even then, they continue to use the same crappy paint in the 6th Gen too!!!! Wont they ever learn???

Nissan definitely uses cheap paint. When I bought my car, 10 mos. ago, the hood was repainted with OE paint due to the incredible amount of chips. The car now has nearly as many chips in it. It is very frustrating.
Hey,
its not just Nissans though, ALL car manufacturers are using crappy paint now. But its generally not because its cheaper, it has a lot to do with enviromental laws, and older paints had different additives, which although made the paint richer and bond better, was damaging to the enviroment.
Either that, or theyre CHEAP!!

yes learnt...I am sure many people have complained as that is what i was told when I called up nissan canada.
Also..I was told that many manufacturers have outsourced most of their smaller jobs to 3rd party organizations, who cut a lot of corners. For one thing i know is that the most common tranny failure on acuras were made by a company called Magna international which was acura used to contract out the tranny.

What does learnt mean?
Anyway, automaker don't make their own parts. Almost everything is subcontracted out.

Yeah, those 5-spd auto trannies in the 00-03 TL's sucked a bunch. They would drop and blow with no sign at all. I had a '99 and that was a 4-spd and was essentially bulletproof compared to the 5-spd. I knew more than 10 guys on the boards who were on their 2nd+ tranny.
I know about subcontracting...I've worked in the automotive industry for 4 years now:

Wha?? Then why did you need someone to tell you this:
It should be no suprise that more than 75% of every car is outsourced some way.

this goes across the board for ANY industry
next year i am getting her painted. i don't care if the value of the car gets effected buy it. this paint is a thin layer and is the crappiest paint i have ever seen.
someone posted that other cars have the same prob. please post which cars. i have never seen another car with more chips and bugs imbedded into the paint, like my max. i hate nissan for that

I am with those who posted previously... all cars' paint is cheaper (or less chip resistant) than those in the past. I don't know if its the formulation, "better" painting methods to ensure an even coat (and less paint being used), or some combo of those along with other federal guidelines for voc release. No idea. All I can say is that it seems like all cars have more nicks, dings, scratches, chips, etc. than those of only a few years ago.
Just my opinion and observations.

Many years ago I was told that one of the drawbacks of Nissan is they rust easily. I don't know how true that is since any car will rust easily if not taken care off properly. Nissan not putting undercoating on doesn't help either.

My 1991 SE has no rust on it at all except for one place ... where the spoiler connects to the trunk lid. Other than that the car has held up wonderfully. The paint seems to be of a much better quality than my 03SE.
