I fully understand what your talking about man, don't let these guys bust your *****. I too am looking for a way to get around the "Auto On" feature on the headlights. In other words just have them Off - Parking Lights - On. The Auto feature is bad for the HIDs if you turn your headlights "on" the whole way each time they ignite once when it hits auto then again when its switched to on. This kills the life of your bulb. IMO its a poor design by Nissan. Soooo in other words if anyone knows how to kill the auto on/off I'd be very pleased.

I am also very interested in this. I hate having to "jump" past auto and HOPE to get to the parking lights one without going to full on or leaving it in the auto position to where the HIDs come on so if anyone can help, please do!

I think this question is dumb, but I'll give you my answer...

Since the AUTO function works by receiving information from the sensor on the dash that monitors outside light levels, why not try cutting that wire. If the sensor readings aren't being relayed back to the AUTO feature, there's a chance this may stop the lights from coming on when selected to AUTO.

If you do decide to go this route, I don't think that it would be a good idea to just cut the wire and hope for the best. If it were me, I would go to my car at about noon, turn it on, turn the **** to AUTO, and read the voltage the sensor is putting out. I would then check the voltage of the sensor when it is pretty dark outside (maybe in the garage with the lights out). This should ensure that you see all, or close to all, of the voltage swing for the sensor.

This way, when you cut the wire to the sensor, you will know if you need to tie it high or low to simulate daytime. Plus, you will know how high to tie it if you do in fact need to tie it high.

I don't think cutting the wires is the answer. I manage to disable the auto function in my i35 by poping the sensor up from the dash, on the body of the sensor you can see 2 or 3 metal strips exposed. I took some aluminum foil, and a transistor from my led and connected all 3 strips, then held it all in place with a rubberband. Done this over 6 months ago, and still works.

Agreed - the only thing, IMHO, that is badly designed on the Max. That "flicker" is bad for the HID bulbs I have heard

There's also a CHANCE you could have the headlights on all the time! Don't cut the wire. Depending on the sensor, it could want more or less resistance and by cutting the wire, you may swing it all the way opposite causing the headlights to be on if it were nice and bright outside!

To disable the function, there might be a relay or fuse that you could pull? I have no need or want to do this so I'm likely not going to be checking any fuseboxes tonight. Check it out if you like...

I thought you were kidding when you wrote the post

Anyway, this is on a 2000 (used AlldataDIY, but I think they just copied this from the shop manual)
Cut wire going to terminal 10 on the Auto Light Control Unit if you can find it...

I've priced and sourced a stock headlight stalk. I'm in the process of trying to get one of my electrical engineer friends to change the switch so it goes parking-headlights-auto, instead of auto-parking-headlights. I figure it can't be too difficult to switch the order, but I don't know a whole lot about electrical engineering. The stalk is only about $70 so I think it's a doable project.

I'll keep you updated if I can get that friend of mine to do it.

I wanna modify one of those stock headlight stalks to allow me to NOT dim the interior lights when it's in Parking light position, so I can have the parking lights & foglights on (w/ rewire) as a Daytime Running light without dimming the interior.

Never got around to it though. Please share any notes he might have!

Some smart guys here already found the answer for resolve this annoying thing. Why not just prepare a flashlight in your storage box in the center console. Everytime you want to disable autolight just shot the flashlight onto the headlight sensor. Once the sensor receives enough light then the headlight wont on.

Just install a Chrysler stalk
For years they have allowed you to run fogs only, and there is also a detent at the top of the "brightness" travel that will keep the dashlights from dimming

That's cool, because I like driving with my headlights on, but it makes the radio and clock near impossible to see, especially with sunglasses on.

thats why you cut the dim wire for the clock, and buy an aftermarket radio! no problem here with dimming.

and as for just turning on the fogs, you can do the foglight re-wire. I always cruse around at dusk with just my fogs and parking lights on.

On my 03 there is also a detent at the end of the "brightness" reostat wheel that allows the interior dash lights to stay on full even when the headlights are on. Don't know if it that way on earlier models.

The flashlight idea is not all that bad, afterall it beats lighting a candle & keeping it on the console.

yeah, if the Chrysler stalk was anywhere near remotely compatible, which I doubt it is... no thanks
