I'm expecting my new MAF to arrive shortly and I'm not sure if I should try and install it myself or just take it to Nissan to do. For those of you that have replaced your own how hard was it and are there any instructions available that detail each step?

Is resetting the ECM part of the procedure and if so can you do that yourself or does Nissan have to do it?

 

On the top of the MAF is the connector -- unclick it. Take a phillips screw driver and remove the two screws and the sensor comes off. Put the new one into the slot and connect the connector. Unconnect batteries for 1 hr and reconnect -- if needed (I would think no!!!) you may/may not have to reprogram the ECU.

 

Are you getting the sensor itself or the whole unit (sensor that is security bolted into a tube type object?

 

Here's my experience with MAF replacement. My real-world experience was totally different than most of what I read on these forums. It makes me think my 00 GLE must be "special" somehow.

An additional note: the electrical connector will not release unless you press down with a small straight-blade screwdriver at the location marked with a small arrow. When re-connecting, press it down again in the same spot to "re-latch".

I did mine last weekend and it was the best mod ive done for my car! I know its not a mod but it sure feels like it. My car has all of its juice back and i love it once again!

 

ABDomega, I believe I'm getting just the sensor.....the part number is 226802Y001. Ordered it from Jerry Rome Nissan last week. I'm itching to get the new one put in as I'm reluctant to drive my car with the SES light on.

 

If you are getting the sensor alone, (as opposed to me, I got the whole tube construction, and I had taken apart my airbox several times so that was easy to replace), then you have to get a special wrench to pull out the security bolts holding the sensor in the tube. Then you will need to pry, pull, wiggle and twist the sensor out of it's place (a rubber gasket/o-ring is holding it in). Then put the new one in in the same manner, twist and push. If you still have an SES light then you should first go to Autozone and get the codes pulled free of charge. I think that if you have a new MAF then you shouldn't have the light, because the blown one is most likely making an O2 sensor read wrong making the engine run lean (that was my problem, although I had no SES light).

Try just unplugging it over night and if the light doesn't go away and you are still pulling codes then go to the dealer as a last resort.

I just installed a new Nissan MAF in my 2001 Maxima. I realized after installing it that I hadn't checked if the new one had an o-ring on the air filter (screened) side. Does anyone who has done this previously remember if they had to move the o-ring over to the new one, or if the new one came with it already installed?
