Hum noise when shifting 02 6-speed manual
The other day when in the city, I was hauling family around, so I had the music low.
I noticed a noise that occured only between shifts that resembled a hum. I was like WTF? Seemed to take place mostly inbetween low speed shifts in traffic.
Seems I have heard of this problem with these manuals. i don't recall what it was. Any ideas? And I have drivetrain warranty left. Would it be covered under that by chance?
The car is adult driven, never abused or raced. No mechanical mods (yet) of any kind.
Thanks for any input.

I am at 55K. When I bought the car...Nissan told me no TSBs and recalls were performed on the car ever.. So I had them all performed when I bought the car at 42K (no charges) and Clutch WAS NOT one of them performed. Did Nissan overlook it on my car?

This may be the infamous dying squirrel TSB. However, in my case I would not describe it as a humming noise. In my case it was definitely a, sometimes very loud, whining noise. A humming noise might be the early signs or it might be a synchro gear going.
The difficulty with the clutch TSB is that you have to demonstrate the sound. I was able to do so by a suggestion of someone on the board. I took the car to a small hill and then road the clutch. It makes the sound pretty quickly once its warm. Once the tech heard the noise, it was a done deal and they replaced it. The solution seems to be to use a 2003 clutch which has a better bearing. My clutch went pretty quickly (around 10k). Hope this helps.

I had this problem and yes, the dealer did replace my clutch at about 20k. It took them a couple of visits and me physically bringing the TSB in for them to change it though. I now have 37k on my '02 max and the noise is returning. I brought it in at about 35k and, as usual, the dealer did not here anything.
I don't understand how you can build a car with an inferior clutch. Not like it's new technology. Plus, I've been driving stick for over 10 years and this car is by far the hardest to get smooth launches with. It's like the grab point moves around.

I've had the clutch howl every once in a while (not regularly, just once or twice every month or two it shows up then goes away)...for the last 20k miles at least. My view is that it's a minor annoyance that I can deal with, whereas the dealer is a major annoyance that I'd rather not deal with. From what I have read/can tell, the clutch howl is not a sign of any impending catastrophe nor is it affecting the performance of my car at all.....
