Fluttering sound--wheel bearings, steelies, or tranny?

Hi all,

Some of you have seen pieces of previous posts where I was asking about a fluttering wup-wup sound coming from the right front wheel area of my 2K GXE. I'd like to repost again now that I have done more troubleshooting. Reputable dealer thinks it is 5 speed transmission going south, but extended warranty company requires inspection and I am hesitant to leave car for a week based on an educated guess.

Behavior: Wup-wup sound that
1. Is loudest in gear while coasting, gone/hard to hear during throttle. You can hear it speed up/slow down with car.
2. Pretty much disappears if I put in neutral while coasting unless coasting is 65+ MPH, then I can hear it, just not as loud
3. Some all-around shimmy associated with it, less shimmy in neutral

What I have done:
1. Replaced tires first with cheap Yoko's, then Michelin MXV 4's 9K miles later
2. Rotate and balance (sound does not move, always in rt. front)
3. Taken to dealer where they analyzed it. First they claimed it was tires and/or steelies, then a day later felt it was the tranny, probable bearings.

I'm hesitant to just go out and buy a set of wheels after wasting $$ on Michelins that ride great but are overpriced. The reduction in sound when in neutral is what leads me to think it may be tranny, but maybe it is the steelies after all.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

if it quits doing it when you put in neutral then I would say is the tranny, since the wheel bearings are still spinning wether in neutral or not it wouldnt be them.......you can still check bearings, take off wheel and sping the rotors, you might feel some roughness or dragging.

sounds like the differential is going bad ! What you are experiencing is diff walk, Acuras have the same problems, and I do transmissions on them so I pretty much seen a tranny do it all- even blow up engines when it locks up. If they give ya a run around with the tranny or something, I live in Chicago if you wanna make the trip out here for a repair lemme know. We can eighter fix the diff or repleace the tranny.
