i looked into this a little while ago.. i was gonna use just one of those ebay camera (pin hole) then wire it up to a power source and then run a wire to my video camera and have that mounted somewhere i can see it but it still looks good.

well the problem is the key lock removal it might be messy, tough , and a PITA. so its all up to you, just make sure you water-proof the hole and make a nice extra lens over the camera.

Let us know how it goes if you do it

Use needle nose pliers to get the key hole out, your gonna have to bend a bracket.
But the real B!tch is finding the correct constant power source from the trunk to your specific camera they are really sensitive.

i have one, but i didnt install it in the key hole. I put mine where the lower right license plate hole is. For california, we have 4 holes on our license plates, while the maxima only utlizes two of them. The piece the license plate attaached to is a seperate piece from the trunk and is made of plastic. Drill a hole the size of your camera and align it with the hole of the license plate hole. It works pretty well. ALso the camera i got is a wireless one, so there was no need for me to run a wire all the way to the front, i just used a power wire from my trunk.

the wires on this camera are different so you have have to cut the ends off & splice wires & use like that....you'll understand if you buy camera i got & see it in-person....

trunk mount camera

I used the camera by Icon. A little pricey but it is color and I did not have to modify key hole lock so I can reinstall lock if I had to.

i think the camera idea perhaps is more useful for the monster SUV's out there that have extremely big blind spots.....our cars have almost no blind spot at all....

To get the lock mechanism out you need to pop the little metal clip holding it on. Then take the arm off. I found it pretty easy to install. My wiring went to my Tuner which had a power lead to power the camera. I love my camera in the back. I find it pretty useful when driving. And also at red lights to watch the people behind me. Also I keep an eye out for anyone trying to sneak up on me. It's dangerous here in the N.O.
My profession is Home security and camera's so this install was pretty simple to me. And a way to incorporate me skills into my car. By the way sometimes I record. I have a power inverter and I'll hook a VCR to it and my camera feed and can record up to 6 hours on EP mode. Or if I really wanted, I can take my timelapse recorder out of my house and hook that up to get as long as I want.
By the way I have an extra 3-way TV tuner for sale. It is brand new and never used. I have an extra because I thought my tuner was broken and purchased a new one. While waiting for the new one to arrive I fixed my problem which I was having.

When I was thinking about doing this, I was researching these "Plate Cam" things that have a camera built into a plate frame..

Not a bad idea if you dont want to cut out your key hole..

The most common one I found is the Crimestopper SV-5600PC and I normally find it from 200.00 to 250.00 dollars..

Here are some specs..

1/3" CCD sensor, 330 lines or resolution
1 lux minimum illumination
130° wide angle CCD color camera
Design integrates a rear vision camera with your vehicle's rear license plate
Eliminates the dangerous “blind-spot” directly behind your vehicle when backing-up

Keep us posted! I'd like to do a rearview camera once I get my I.C.E. but I'm not sure I'd want to lose the trunk keyhole. What if your battery was dead and you need to get in the trunk to grab some something big like a spare tire or whatever.

Ive thought about doing a rearview camera, it would definitly be utilized when im parking in long beach or the city (NYC), getting into spots and watchin my backside is a b!tch especially in long beach where there are no wide open spots.

Why couldn't you guys hook it up (if you have an amp) to the remote wire? Since it will only work when your DVD unit is powered up, this would be a constant source of 12+

I knew someone would say somethin' like that. What if you've got crap in your trunk too, like things that are too tall or wide to fit through the pass through...jaknow? Murphy's Law right...

My car is a daily driver and my only car right now, so I always have to take practicality very seriously...

My car is a daily driver too...and my only car but I have nothing in the trunk literally.(stripped trunk) so that doesn't bother me....plus I have 2 key fobs....

Couldn't you just open the door using the key and use the remote trunk popper?

uhhh. fobs don't work if your battery is truly 'dead'. i know from experience. ever had a jump-pack in your trunk but can't get to it because your trunk can't pop because you bought a silly cf trunk lid, have a dead bat, and a system in between the jump-pack and the whole....
