Anyone replaced Mass Air Flow sensor?

Has anyone replaced Mass Air flow sensor?
Dealer wanted $375 to replace $100 part in one hour. Wanna do it myself.
Has anyone done it? If so, is there anything particular to it?

And olso , how do I shut off Check Engine light after I changed Air sensor?
Thanks
Nick

That is a rip off. Buy the sensor yourself, it took me less than 5mins to repalce mine and I it cost me $99 bucks for the part.

Is it a piece of plastic right behind the air box?

I agree... unless you're under warranty... just buy it and do it yourself....

i have an '02 as well. you will find a plastic piece that's screwed into the piping (also has a plug into it) that leads from the stock air box. it's very easy to find. I had to use the a standard (flathead) screwdriver to CAREFULLY pry it out. you'll pull out the housing (which is a plastic piece about 3-4 inches long), and the sensor is a small metal wire (looks almost like a paper clip) with a small resistor on it.

Pull the negative battery lead for 30 minutes or the light should clear after a few days if the MAF was the issue.

another comment on the check engine light... if you go to the FAQs portion of this site there is a reset procedure that does not require unplugging the battery.

It involves timing pedal pushes... took me maybe 5 tries until I got it but sure enough the light was off and i didn't lose my radio station presets. Just look for ECU Reset Procedure or something like that.

Yes, you can change it yourself. Don't replace the entire unit you get from the dealer. Just unscrew the sensor and take that part out and install that into the MAF housing. Removing the entire housing will take a long time.

Also since you have a 2K you may have to take it to the dealer after to reprogram the ECU for the new updated MAF. The general concensus on this is that it needs to be done. There have been many threads on this.

So I changed it

Took me about an hour, but i replaced whole unit, with the housing. Started the car and it runs like a baby, just like a new one. Got the power back now. Light is on, but will have to reset it, so if anyone knows how, please inform, otherwise will search FAQ for an answer.
Price for unit was $106, here in Boston area.

I belive the MAF information should be a STICKY... this topic comes up every week now. 00-01 cars can't just reset the ECU, there is a updated MAF ECU program that needs to be uploaded into the ECU. If you want the best MPG and your car to really run right you need to get the ECU update for the MAF. I noticed I picked up almost 4MPG from doing just that and car felt alot more powerfull at low end.

To be honest I had a CEL when my MAF went out and after about 50 miles the light went out and the car returned to normal. Go figure.

Can I get my ecu reprogrammed after I install the part? I just bought a new MAF today and the guy said that they had to reset the ecu, but I figured I could do it myself. But if something needs to be added then I guess they have to do that, right? And I paid $123 for mine her in Maryland.

Unless you have a cracked housing causing an air leak all you need is the sensor.

Call DAVEB and order it from him. It's been a while since I've seen a price on 1 from him but for a 2k it sould only be like 80 bucks or less.

This is a 2min job.

disconnect the wiring harness from the old MAF. 2 Torx drive screws hold it to the housing, remove'em. Put the new MAF in tighten the screws and reconnect the harness and your done.

Okay, putting it on is no problem. Especially since I was familiar with the parts from assembling the Frankencar Intake a while back. But I was told that the car needs to be reprogrammed and updated. Plus I can't get that damned SES light off my dashboard. How do I get rid of that?

By the way....Man is my car riding and accelerating like a champ!!! Reminds me of when I first bought her, but better. Because now she's lowered with wider tires and bigger rims.

You can still take the car to a dealer to get the ECU reflashed but that's all you'll be paying them for and you'll have saved $400. You may even be able to get that done for free if you shop many different dealers and keep bugging them.

As far as the SES, that will be taken care of during the reflash. There are other ways to turn the light off but since you need a reflash it's better to have it on when you go to the dealer.
