K&N Filter
I am trying to decide whether just to stick with the stock paper filter or go ahead and spend the 50 bucks to get the K&N for my AE. Also, if you chose "get other", what other type of drop in are you referring to? After reading what I could find on this board, I don't have enough information to make a decision. What are your thoughts?

I had a K&N drop-in for almost 30k miles and never had a problem with it. There aren't any performance gains though, if that's something you're looking for. I felt there was slightly improved throttle response, but that could be my imagination. But anyways, if ya do get it, just be sure to not over oil it when you clean it, since apparently that's what's causing all the MAF problems. This applies to the panel filter for the stock airbox, and to the cone filter that K&N makes for intakes.
Btw, the only reason I'm not using it now is because the techs at the Nissan dealership I went to either were dumb enough to throw it out (despite the big sticker on it saying NON-DISPOSAL FILTER) or they just stole it.... I only found out much later when I opened my airbox and found a paper filter in there....
I have a Berk intake now with K&N cone filter and that's been good to me for the past 250 miles thus far....

$35 doesn't seem so bad but why not just go OEM? Does K&N make a remarkable difference in filtering capabilities?

but you can clean the K&N. it does breath better than a stock one, if ya do the GAB with it, well seems to work pretty well. Altho I did blow my MAF at 28k, 27k of which I had the K&N in... dunno tho, these MAF's crap out all the time

alot of people have teir comments on the filter. I experienced on my last car that it toped out at 125mph, I put the K&N and it went over to 135mph where it hit governor i think. and it gave it a loud grunt sound when eccelerator pressed. my opinion get it for a starter "not really" mod.

It's funny that you should mention this. I saw that GD last night and pretty much made the decision that I would purchase the K&N full kit. I can't justify spending an extra sixty bucks for the Apexi filter, the K&N should be just fine.

Get it!!!!
It's a simple replacement filter that improves your gas mileage fuel economy a little but dyno improvements and reduces the cost of paper filter replacements every 3000-4000 mile or whatever!!! Just buy it I get one for ever car I purchase. My expo has one my Slowyota had one and my max had one until I bought my Injen intake. Just get it. Go to your local auto parts store and you can get it between 35 and 45 dollars..

Thanks for linking that article Schmatt. Unfortunately after reading the discussion on the BOTG msg board analyzing it, I think it would be very difficult to make any conclusion from those tests. First of all, the tests were done on a 1992 Miata, and I am sure it is a total different system when compared to the 2001 Maxima. After seeing the poll results from this board, I feel comfortable in purchasing the K&N intake from Berk and shouldn't have any problems with it.

Well, that's your choice. But many people on BOTG forum also feel negatively about the K&N. It doesn't really matter what car you are looking at. There is a air intake with a filter in the way. How well this filter works will determine how clean your engine stays. I personally ruined my stock MAF with it. It was overoiled from the factory. I have since switched back after seeing all the negative info on it. I have more piece of mind using the stock paper filter.

filter on all my vehicles. I have not blown any MAF on any of my vehicles. Out of 5
K&N filter I bought, only one was over oiled. I cleaned it immediately before installing
it onto my son's 04 Altima. Only thing I can say is do your research listen to both
positive and negative comments on the K&N filter and make a sound decision. Good
luck in whatever you do.

i used k&n in camry for 140 k miles w out problems and had better performance with it, In the maxima i havent put in K&n becaue of fears of MAF blowing, its been 70k on maxima and so far MAF is still good, i think its becaue i used stock air filter. But if somebody can prove that even with stock filter MAF will blow then ill stand corrected.

Thanks Mike.....I actually just got done installing the Berk intake with the K&N cone filter and damn, am I impressed. There is definitely a major difference in the sound as there is an awesome deep growl now when WOT. Let's just say that I am VERY happy.

I have had 3 cars with the K&N ('88 Caprice, '94 Maxima, '02 Maxima). Personally, I like the fact you don't have to worry about it for 50k. In addition, when I cleaned the filter in the '02, I did not over-oil the filter. This was in the '02 for over 45,000 miles with no ill effects on the MAF.

Forget the K & N. I got mine then I got the INJEN cold air intake and WOWZERS what a difference!!! I've got only 5000 miles on it if you want to buy it. I've got the cleaner/charger kit too- $20 and you take care of shipping costs and it's yours!

I've been using a K&N stock replacement filter for 1 year now and like it better than the throw-away filters. I live in an area where I have to replace a normal filter twice a year. It is great having a K&N that I can wash and put back in. This filter is actually saving me money!

Don't forget to add the cost of the cleaning kit to the filter.
I'm sticking with the K&N panel filter from 3rd gen, I don't want any MAF issues.
Funny that Nissan has been using the same size filter since at least 1989.
