Should I install fogs before winter?

So, we got a slight dusting of snow here in southern Oregon yesterday and I noticed that my headlights collected the snow better than repelling it (parked). I have a GXE with no fog lights. So the real question is -- will the snow collect on my healights while driving? (or will the heat melt it? I dont want to be driving down HWY58 some night in a blizzard and have my lights covered in snow!) Are fog/driving lights in order or not?

Sure they will collect. Even your headlights collect.

Put them on anyway for safety. More light the better.

As long as is doesn't haze too bad, try putting some wax on your headlights lenses after you wash and polish them so the dusty snow slides off easier.

if you really want to SEE in the snow....get yellow fogs. It is well-known that yellow gets better visibility in snow/rain conditions (while white arguably has better visibility in clear conditions)....if you watched the 24-hours of Laguna Seca race yesterday, you would notice that when it began to rain, almost all the cars switched over to yellow lights.....

Yeah, that is cool. I only use my fogs when there is fog, rain or snow in the air, or if I am going stealth mode at dusk w/o headlights. I also make sure not to use my fogs if there is water on the the road with no precipitation. I read somewhere online that France actually legalized yellow headlamps for some period in time only to illegalize them again. I think it makes sense for race cars because the drivers never have to see them directly.

our fog lights are so weak (35-55W) that there's not much worry about blinding other drivers. Plus, the fogs should be pointed farther down than your low-beam headlights anyhow...

thanks for the responses guys.

Is the heat from aftermarket fogs something to worry about? I may be going on drives at times for up to 4 hours...

I even went as far as putting an extra set of yellow fog lights on my car. The stock fogs i used more powerful bright white lights and i am in the process of mounting a set for those times of need. Some think its stupid or unneeded, but i think its better to have it and use it when i need it.
Its also prob illegal where i am mounting them (behind the factory grill) as they will be higher than most external fogs are usually mounted. If anyone know if this would def be illegal let me know.
PM or email to - morovasa@shu.edu I just want to know for my own knowledge, i am gonna do it regardless!

No it shouldn't be an issue. Make sure your get a quality brand like PIAA, knock offs on eBay may cause issues. Spend a little more $$ up front and you wont have to worry.

I think fogs would be helpful in the snow... provided they're angled right and the right color (yellow).... I've been thinkin about getting yellower bulbs myself, mine are stock right now...

like irish said yellow will work better...white colors cause more glare in the fog, rain, snow and usually make things worse...yellow light doesnt bounce off the fog as much and you will be able to see better.

Narva Golds are good, they range between $12-$15. Wattage ranges from 55-110. Are you upgrading your harness putting a 100W bulb in?

How would you go about that upgrade? (I'm new to the lighting stuff, but am looking to get yellower, brighter fogs)

Not quite as they don't "switch" bulbs (even burned out ones if they don't have to). With the speed differencials seen having several catagories racing all at once, the main reason they have yellow and white headlights is so that they can tell the faster categories (LMP 1 and 2) from the slower ones (GTS and GT) coming from behind.

I don't think putting 100W into a 55W "max" socket is a problem. I've done this in a couple of other sets of fog lights that tell you to use 55 max, and the wiring hasn't been a problem. (the only problem I can think might exist is plastic melting, but that prob. won't happen either).

Am I wrong? Will the 100W not work in this car unless you re-wire?

my car didn't come with fogs so I'll have to run the wires, right? (meaning there is no pre-existing wiring, right?)

I just ordered the 50/55W from http://www.danielsternlighting.com. You'll have to email him. His knowledge is quite extensive. Irish44j ordered from him as well. Mine haven't shipped yet though.

The 85-110W bulbs can be purchased from suvlights.com. Keep in mind that they will be overwattage bulbs.

This is what suvlights told me:

"yes, we have both the 85W & 110W in stock & we can ship tomorrow"

I don't know if they have 55W.

I said zip IT, Zippin. I've heard enough rippin' on some of the people who are inquisitive and don't have the search feature. The use of the repost emoticon is becoming quite redundant in its own right. Get over the Q and A is all I'm saying.

Just a note....Narva Golds are sold as "Candlepower Golds" in the USA (Narva is used in Europe). They are one and the same, and are made by Philips. I got them from Daniel Stern, but apparently I bought the last three

On a side note, looks like my previous buyer is not coming through (shocker!) ...so I still have a set of slightly-used PIAA Crystal Ion fog bulbs for sale...this is PIAA's yellow bulb. They work fine and I didn't use them much before I switched to Candlepowers (different shade of yellow).

let me know if you're interested....Puppetmaster, you're local so if you want them, you'll get the "local special"

interesting...I could have sworn that the 2 lead cars were running white lights in the early evening (in the outboard housings of the headlights) and when it started raining turned the whites off and had yellows on (in the inboard light housing)...maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention....

guess you learn something new every day.

i actually felt bad for a few minutes. then i thought of the time before i donated. i needed some information, and i read threads from july 04, back to jan 04. when the server was down for days, i decided to donate. not so that i could use the search option, but to help out.

so why don't you do some work if you have newbie q's. or donate some $ to a great site.

Adding Additional Yellow Fogs

Ok this is my first post and I read all the verbiage in regards to searching through google for topics and all that jazz and found this thread so I am posting in it.

I want to know if anyone here has added additional Yellow fog lights like the PIAA 001 Plasma Ion Yellow Solitaire Series to the lower valance area of their vehicle. I have read all the talk of adding the yellow film over the regular fogs and that but does anyone have pics of how additional fogs would look added? This is just something I am thinking about doing as a I use to have a 00 Chrysler Sebring with Blue Fogs and it looked sweet when I had all the lights on heads, fogs, and additional blue fogs. I know having blue in the front was illegal but I was never pulled over for them whlie I had the car. Anyhow anyone that has done this and has pics could you let me take a peek or asnyone else that wants to add their .02 cents feel free in regards to how they think it would look.

Thanks in advance Guys & Gals
