Worth it buying a salvage?

So I've read on here to avoid salvage cars like the plague but what if I can get it really cheap? Is it worth it then?

Here it is:

Personally, the headachs that follow make this deal shady. I would rather pay more and have a warranty and less problems.

$13,700 for a salvage titled 01 GXE is really high.

I don't think its worth it. If you decide you want to anyway, find a really good body shop and mechanic and have them go over it with a fine tooth comb.
The price they have listed is a joke.

FYI: Carfax shows it as having an accident but not a salvage title. However, it was a rental car. Run away. Run far, far away!

If the frame wasn't bent then their is nothing wrong with a salvage title vehicle. I driven a salvage titled 2000 BMW 750il not 740 and that thing drove like a dream and it look perfect. I drove plenty of salvage titled vehicles and they all ran great. It depends on how well the body shop fixed it.

Well its an auction group which sell mostly repo cars....and the 13k is just their book value listing, it wont sell anywhere that. I ve been there before and cars usually go for a few thousand below the book value so this may go for around 9K I am thinking.

If you choose to buy a salvaged vechile then make sure you are going to drive that car till it dies, because trying to sell it in the future will be a big pain and you might not find anyone willing to take the chance you did. Just keep that in mind.

I can tell thats a 2k1 GXE with no options.....The price is not worth it at all...I bet you can find the exact same car at a dealers for about 11.5k (w/warranty)

Not all salvage cars are bad....like Trance Artur said.....As long as the frame isn't bent then your totally fine....Just run a carfax and if there was no previous problems (i.e. flood, fire, odo rollback, etc etc) then theres no reason to bag on salvage cars......You just have to make sure everything is intact....if theres parts that are missing like cupholders, ashtray, accessories....then thats up to you if you want to buy it....personally I wouldn't buy a salvage titled car if it came all beat up and missing parts.....BUT I DO know for a fact there are PLENTY of salvaged title cars out there that are in working order, not missing any parts, have no bad history (no flood, fire) and have a perfectly fine frame.....JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET IT AT THE PRICE YOU WANT!

btw insurance companies are stupid sometimes....in some cases they will give a car a "total loss" when the damage wasnt even that bad....My friend's example is perfect....He drives an 03 RSX base auto and he hit the railing on the freeway....and let me tell you, when I went to go see the car, the damages were NOT 12k (what his car was worth)....well insurance company considered his car a total loss and gave him full money back.....He was happy since now he drives a fully loaded TL....but I'm sure that RSX is now going to be picked up by someone for REAL CHEAPS....and its gonna be running in perfect condition with about 3-4k worth of repairs.....

Hahaha, wtf @ price!? My loaded SE is in near perfect shape (with 36k on the ticker) costs 15Gs now. A salvaged Maxima 2000 GXE (without a single damn option either!) isn't supposed to cost more than $5000 if even that. I've seen GXE's with less mileage go for $8000. Good lord.

Yeah, like everyone else is saying...you can find a non-salvaged car with more options for less than the one you've listed here.

I don't think salvage is worth it at all, you never know what you're getting. I know someone who's in the business of buying cars at a salvage yard and reselling with a reconstructed title. Some of those cars have been through hell and back, it's unbelievable what people will pay money for.

salvage title should gte 30-40% LESS than clear title. SO if clear title is $14K then you should be getting this POS for 8-9K. Salvage may be fine but they aint worth sh*t

PTP, if you can't get this car for 7grand then don't bother....it shouldn't be worth that much....make sure you really get the price down when you go to the auction....

What if your salvaged car looked like this before it was fixed? Would you still feel comfortable buying it?

And then don't forget, it can be sitting there like that for a while. With no windows, no cover, nothing - just all the elements pouring into it. Then someone comes and pretties it up, and makes a lot of money off of it.

You can do much better than that, especially at that price. Even www.carmax.com has some better deals floating around, and they are on the high end of things. At least you get some piece of mind there.

makes it a real pain to resale, I would avoid it unless you are getting an awesome deal (to the tune of <$3500 and is fairly easy to repair).

I've seen dealers pull some shady things too, like resell prior salvage cars with 'cleaned' titles. My cousin bought a 99 ML320 Mercedes that supposedly only had one owner and 42k miles but the thing ended up burning oil like crazy.

none mentioned that most insurance companies will not issue a full coverage policy on a car w/salvage title. It means you won't be covered if that car gets stolen, vandalized, or collision.

I will sell you my 2000 GXE 5 spd with 60K mi w/$1500 worth of stereo mods for 10 grand

An insurance company will give you full coverage only if you apply for a reconstructed title with the DMV and pass salvage motor vehicle inspection with a state trooper for safety. Each state may have different laws though.

Hehe... I hope it's not a rental from Texas! At the 2000 SE-R Convention in Dallas, I had a 01 and beat the crap out of that thing. Between my friend and I, we dented the roof from sitting on it, killed the tranny (<8000 miles) by spinning it on the track and going rear-wards with the car pointed forward at about 60MPH (violent shaking and smoke from the wheel wells), tossed an industrial jack around in the trunk while cornering and 'testing' the ABS brake system, and countless other things.

After that and several other track events with rental cars, I'd never consider purchasing a rental again... no matter *HOW* good the deal is!

With a salvage title the 750il still has a 60k warranty and the BMW dealer did work under that warranty.

Those aren't even the correct mud flaps on the front, looks bigger and not rounded on the bottom like it's supposed to be. Also rust on the seat "anchor" for the passenger seat looking through the back door.
