Tires slip when I accelerate from a complete stop

I recently bought a used 2001 Nissan Maxima GXE. The car came off a lease and I got a great deal on it. I had been previously driving a Ford Escort with no ABS and a < 100 hp engine (!!) so this could be totally normal.. so please let me know.

When I am at a stop sign or waiting at an intersection, when I hit the accelerator pedal I feel like the wheels are not getting traction immediately. I feel like they slip slightly and once the car is moving there is no problem at all. Is there a problem with the car or is it something that is normal. Just want to make sure I am not paranoid. I bought this car used with 19500 miles on it. The car is in excellent condition... almost new.

Feel the power! That's just you putting your foot down a little too hard. Try to be more smooth when you come down onto the pedal. I made the same mistake the very day I purchased mine. Sitting at some light I wanted to floor it so I could take off and see what my baby could do and the front wheels just SPUN and kept SPINNING. Relax a little. ;]

Smilie I am very careful with my car but sometimes you just want that extra power if a two lane intersection is merging into a single lane or you are merging into a highway. Point noted and thanks. I was getting a little worried!

Lets see...
Escort <100 hp. Pretty hard to accidentally spin the rubber
Maxima 220 hp. A little easier

Not sure why you refer to ABS though, that has nothing to do with accelleration, that is part of the brakes. ABS is not traction control.

Also, it has to do with tires. Worn tires and/or poor performance tires will slip more easily....

GXEs don't have Potenzas. :P

And yeah, chill on the gas. I learned to drive on this old POS 93 Ford Tempo and when I finally started driving the Max I'd hit the gas a little hard.

yes it is due to the power but good tires will stick to the road better and get better traction.
i replaced my tires with potenza s03 and my tires dont spin as much. they are a little loud since they are W rated but still worth it
