Starter Motor, DIY ?

My Started just died yesterday on my 2000 Infiniti I30t and I'm planning to replace it myself, any advice doing this ? Something important to do in the process ? Is normal for a 4 years Infiniti to have this problem ? Thanks in advance to all !

It happens.

If you have an aftermarket intake it should be easier to get to, otherwise you'll have to rip out the intake to get back there I think. I've never done it, but it looks like a DIY problem.

remove your stock airbox to get access to the starter.. u'll need

a swivel joint
two sockets, 15 mm and 17 mm i believe
and a long extension or pipe for more torque

those things are in there tight and they're behind the starter itself

and maybe get soem anti-seize for when u put those long bolts back in (they're about 4-5 inches long)

another note, the harness is difficult to unplug, but keep at it, u should eventually get it.

the harness was a headache for me. But it is easy, just takes some muscle and patience. Might as well do a hyperground kit since you'll have so much empty space.

The mechanic checked the starter solenoid and was OK, then opened the starter and the carbons were damaged and almost inexistent, very worn, he replaced the carbons and repacked the internal part that looks like a stick full of wire and now the starter unit is woking like a charm. My advantage here is that I can cross the border (to Mexico) and the mechanics there are very knowledge about this kind of parts and very cheap, he repacked and replaced the neccesary parts for only $45 dlls, against $240 that is the price at NAPA for a remanufactured one, I save a lot of money, and labor was FREE ! I did it myself !

you dont even need a lift and all you need is a small number of assorted tools and half a brain..............by the way dont forget to disconnect the negative battery cable first unless you want to weld some stuff.
