Should I switch to high mileage oil?

Reposting because noone answers in the Lube forum.

So currently I am using Mobil Synthetic 10w30 and I was browsing the shelf and saw Mobil and Penzoil high mileage oil for cars w/ over 75K miles. I have 83K on my Max. Should I switch over to the high mileage? WHat advantages, if any, does it have to switch?

Peace.

If what you have is working, and there are no leaks, why change? I'd keep doing exactly what you're doing.

Because the high mileage oil claims to have stuff which is good/better for high milage cars.

IMO there's just as much of a chance that the new oil with different additives could loosen up the accumulated crud and cause leaks from old gaskets.

i have heard it said from many people that it doesnt matter what kind of oil you use as long as you stay consistant. IMO the mobil one is great, the only time i switch is for winter i go to 5w30 and summer i use 10w30. mobil 1 has shown fantastic results in any mileage vehicle

You can't go wrong with using Mobil 1 synthetic multi-vehicle forumla. This is supposedly a good mix for all kinds of vehicles with all different mileages.

The reason I use Mobile1 synthetic is because it gives better lubricating qualities for all kinds of driving. These qualities will contribute to longer engine life (greater mileage). I see no reason to change if high mileage and low problem is the goal.

mobil one is what i use although im not gonna try to sell it to you like most people do and make claims that it increases horsepower and allows for more mileage on cars. in order to reap the benefits of mobil 1 it should be used from the very first oil change anyways. and no i would not use any high mileage oil because some of them have additives that cause seals to swell, meaning that if you switched back to a regular oil the swell could go away and cause leaks that were not previously there. 5w 30 is what is suggested to be run in nissan vehicles. lets put it this way, if you look on the back of a quart of oil they all have to meet certain standards which should be listed on the back of the container. mobil 1 states "Meets ACEA A1/B1/A5/B5-02 and japanese valvetrain wear requirements" whereas castrol GTX states that it "exceeds" these requirements. whether or not these are just marketing devices is for you to juudge.........but hey if nascar uses Mobil 1 im pretty sure that it can take some abuse!

As a chemist and former lubrication engineer, I suggest that you stick with Mobil 1 10W-30. The 10W-30 weight has less thickeners added to it to attain the 30 weight when warm, the pumping viscosity is about the same a 5W30 dino oil. In the winter the lower pour point of the synthetic (about -50F) should protect those main bearings on cold start-up.

The high mileage oils add more additives which are useless unless you have abused the car and not changed the oil regularly. Don't change what ain't broke!
