Buying an 02 SE should I purchase extended warranty?
I'm buying an 02 SE Automatic on Friday with 47,000 miles on it. It's a Nissan certified used car and I can purchase the 100,000 mile extended powertrain warranty for $250. I can go a step further and buy the extended bumper to bumper for another $599 for a total of $849.
I wouldn't mind spending the $250 on the powertrain warranty but I have a good feeling I'll probably never use it. Spending $849 is a little more then I would like spend right now but having the bumper to bumper would be very nice.
With all the Maxima experience here do you guys think I need to buy a warranty or should this Maxima hold up well?
Thanks.

Warranty
It always nice to have the peace of mind of an extended warranty. I have the 100k warranty on my 2003 SE that I got when I bought it new. I traded in a 2000 GXE that I also had the 100k warranty. If it helps the car had 75,000 miles on it and I never had to use the warranty. The only thing I replaced up to that point were the brakes. The cars of very reliable so I think it will hold up if you don't purchase it but like I said peace of mind is nice.

I agree........
I agree when everything is all said and done and your in with the finance guy just about to close the deal get up & walk out...................There is no
way they let you leave over a extended warranty. Either they throw in the warranty or you walk.

I paid around $900 for my extended warranty (Nissan Gold bumper-2-bumper).....so far in 1 1/2 years it has covered at least $1000 in repairs/replacement parts, and I still have 40,000 miles left on it. So in my book, it's well worth it.

2K Max purchased in 99 w/ 7yr/100K plan, used it before I started to work for dealership, but it does come in handy.
Recently bought a G35 Sedan 6spd, I got tossed in a freebie extended nissan-infiniti warranty 7yr/100K can't complain.
Have had customers w/ extended plans and cars that needed lots of work, hoping I get some decent time with CPL(Customer Pay Labor) to bust my hump and find out it was covered by warranty, and get killed on time paid on vehicle.

I bought the extended 5/60 warranty, but i'm debating if i'm really gonna need it or use it up. I only have 13K miles & the 5 years seems like it's gonna come before the 60K.
Can you get your money back if you remove the warranty before the 3/36 period?

get it..piece of mind is better then don't have it and something breaks... I replace all coils under my extended warranty... but It ran out.. so now am on my own.......but so far the Max is a reliable car...

Mine has already paid for itself in one visit. The A/C compressor went to hell and the extended warranty took care of it plus they rotated my tires for free. Bottom line, are you feeling lucky that your vehicle will run trouble free?

It seems like tranny problems are the biggest issue with a used Maxima (although your's only has 47k miles on it). I haven't heard of many Maxima engines blowing up, although I'm sure its happened. All the other little things that might go wrong are just a guess, so how much is piece of mind worth to you? At first, I would say just get the powertrain which will take care of the BIG failures and you can handle the little problems and hope they don't add up to more than $599 over the next few years. But then, take into account the fact that you live in Maine (I'm from Boston). For all of you who don't know why this is important, we're talking -20 degree windchills on a regular basis, icy roads (and therefore salty) all winter long and 10-foot snow banks. That car is going to take a certain amount of pounding no matter how you drive it. I'd say get the extended warranty and negotiate them down on it.

I bought an extended warranty through my credit union, and it goes like this.
It's 100k miles from the day I bought my car, my car had 39,700k miles on so I'm covered until 139,700 miles.
The best part of this warranty is that I can have any ASE certified shop do the work, not just Nissan so I don't have to put up with their shyt, or if I want to leave in a mod, I can, as they do not have to report it to Nissan, only the cr union.
Don't know what way you're getting the loan, through a cr union or Nissan lenders, but that's what I did.

So you're saying you got the loan through the credit union and got an extended warranty through them too?
Hmmm... I might look into that cuz I'm actually thinking of taking a home equity line to pay off the car and combine the car payments with the mortgage....

Get the warranty for $400 (or less) or don't buy the car.

Just because someone tells you something doesn't mean you have to take it.
Anytime I've dealt with a car dealer, I get up and start walking out if they don't like my offer, almost 99.99% guaranteed the sales guy will try and stop me.

It's going to seem like you're paying less but in reality you're going to end up paying A LOT more for the car.
ex: $20k loan at 7%.
5 years, monthly payment is about $400. Total interest paid over the loan is about $3,700
Use a line of credit and push that out to 20 years at 5% the monthly payment goes to $130. That sounds nice...but the total interest paid over the loan is over $11,000.
.......spell that out... ELEVEN THOUSAND in interest. You may want to find another way to free up money each month...using a line of credit to reduce your car payment isn't a sound investment.

Anyway, here's a viable option... same example, $20k on the car... at 5 years it's $400/month w/ $3700 in interest.
Push it to 20 years on a 5% loan and it's $130/month, $11k in interest over 20 years.
But, if you to 20 years at 5% AND put an extra $150 every month toward the loan then the overall interest is just over $4k. So if you want to "free up" $100/month and take a $300 hit over 20 years (insignificant) and have the discipline to make that extra $150 payment every month then you can have an extra $100/month almost for free... $400 payment goes to $130 + extra $150 so ~$300/month.
The discipline part is what you need to decide...can you do that? Then refinance. If you can't then don't.
