Refine the quality of your 5th gen...

so i know, some people complain, this car is cheaply made. some parts are not up to par. i agree. and i noticed it this weekend while workin on a friends i30. i noticed something that to me, made a world of difference.
most of our complains are a culmination of 1 thing....noise. i have always gotten annoyed at the noise i get when i hit bumps. it's like everything movies all at once in unison (sp?) saying "screw you marco"
then i remember talkign to a fellow .org as he rolled by my house one day and i said "don't you hate it when you hit a bump and everything shakes". he agreed and said that he has his bolts and screwdriver wrapped in his gloves in his glove compartment. that stuck in my mind, then as i was working on the i30 i noticed that the glove has a VERY thin layer of felt on it. i also noticed that her pocket above her radio ALSO had a thin layer of felt, along with the armrest pocket, and all over where there was space to fit "stuff".

upon examinatin of my POS, i saw that we DON'T have anything. so i realized that all these noise, clings, tinks, plops, rattle, etc.. can be very easily solved with a little cushioning. i have some fuses int he secret armrest part. some felt would not let those rattle so much. some felt in the glove compartment can very well stop that noise.

seemed long, and maybe this is more of a duh with some people, but for me it was something that stood out. i plan on gettin a VERY thin layer of black/grey felt and covering the door pockets, glove, armrest pockets. hell, even the COIN HOLDER is gettin a little felt. i hate it when the coins chingaling when i hit bumps.

ok, i'm done.

I agree, and although I believe you will find some success in this idea be prepared to spend a lot of hours on this project. I usually just play my music and make sure the next car I buy will be quiet..

Good idea. I'd like to see how it turns out. Something like this is cheap to do, but very time consuming to do a really good, clean job.

The rattling change pisses me off so bad too. Sometimes I actually hold onto it while I drive on long rough sections of the freeway...

time consuming, i think not. if you notice, the glove and the armrest pockets are all perfect rectangles....some felt that can prolly be good with PLAY scissors and some 3m spray adhesive and the job is done. this is more a joke than a task. the coin may be tricky, but i still think should be easy. also the secret armrest compartment. the door side pockets, plan on putting some felt on the floor of it and the side of it.

and as far as being prepared, i'me pretty quick with car tasks. in fact, i just came in from swapping out a blown strut. 35 minutes...not too shabby. this shouldn't be a problem. i'll prolly do it on saturday, at the same time i'll prolly take down the door panels and grease up the window track, as i said i'd do in another thread.

Funny story...

Last summer, my dad and I were heading out to a family gathering one day in his Cobra, which has the same little POS coin holder as the Max. The engine was at a certain rpm that was making the exhaust rattle the coins really badly, and my dad glanced down for a second to see what all the noise was, and in that split second that he glanced down, the car veered over onto the shoulder, right where the pavement happened to be all beat up. We were going prob. 60 or 70 and it was like BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM and the suspension is so stiff, the fregan car was just getting hammered. Funny thing is, the coins were shaking a hell of a lot more while the car was hitting the pot-holes.

It seemed pretty bad, like there might have been some kinda significant damage to the driver's door area. So, after my dad regained control, I said nothing for a while, b/c I could only imagine what was goin through his mind.....he takes out the car that he puts about 4,000 miles a year on, and something stupid like this happens. Turned out that just the underside of the rocker panel got scratched up, and that piece is plastic on those cars, so pretty cheap to replace.

Moral of the story: DON'T LOOK DOWN AT THE COINS WHEN THEY START RATTLING! And it's not like my dad is a bad driver, it was weird how as soon as he looks down, there we go off the road!

It doesn't bother me with the rattle since I know where they are coming from, especially the coin, the armrest compartment. But one thing that bother me a bit is the glove box where i put my ice scraper. when I make a sharp turn, i hear a thunk and i thought it was something wrong with my shock but it was the ice scraper banging sliding sideway each time I turn right or left.

I just hate it when you have a cd case that some one else left in your side door compartment. So you start hearing all this rattling that sounds terrible. It drives you crazy... look under the car, under the seat... just never remember to check the side door compartment until after everything else in the damn car. .... felt would be nice.... so, you want to do it for me polo? Since your so handy and all? J/k

Good idea, Polo. I had thought about the felt thing for the glove box. Didn't think of the other areas, though.

My rattles seem to be coming from the trim surrounding the window switches on the door's armrest. Like when I'm driving and I put some pressure down on it, it stops rattling. It's so annoying. My last max had the same exact deal.

here's a tip......

Keep your coins in an empty film canister and store it in the armrest pocket. Coins fit perfectly, its easy to find and easy to get the coins out. No more loose, jingling, annoying change.

This is interesting. I have some felt in my 99.5 SEL for coins and I have cut out circles of chamois for the cup holders. If you took some velcro and just used the cloth and not the rubbery course side, you could do this without adhesive. I may still do this on some of my car components... I don't usually hear the creaks, because I am always listening to the radio, and really loudly!

And the doors on the Maxima are twice as heavy than the doors on 3rd Gen Altima... you get what you pay for. I have always loved the thump of a BMW door.

WOW, i didn't know this was such a big problem. I keep my change in the top cup holder and i never get it rattling or moving, my glove box is full of stuff (even have a set of handcuff ) and the little compartment above the handrest has my gum and sunglass pouch. I recently drove around with no radio for about a month (another story) and i was surprised how quiet the car actually was.....aside from the squeaking of the car's frame and the gas in the gas tank.
