Engine dies after cold start...help!!

Hey guys, my car has been giving me problems when I start it up in the mornings. It starts up fine, but after about 15 sec the rpm's drop very low and the car sputters and dies. It starts back up just fine and if I give it a little gas it will not die. My CEL light came on a while ago but will stay on for a week and then turn off for a week, it is kinda weird. Wondering if anyone has any input. I am thinking about going to the dealer and having my ECU reflashed, so please let me know if I should do this or not. Thanks!!

have u checked the battery? it could be a lot of different things but check the voltage your battery is giving out.

i don't think it's the battery, it's pretty new and have never had any problems cranking the car up.

Give us the CEL codes, would help.

Probably ignition coils or a MAF.
(Does anything else ever seem to go bad on our cars other than those and the O2 sensors...?)

I had the same problem. Cold start in the morning and after work, the engine would sputter and stall. It would then run fine after restarting. If I gave it gas or let it warm up a little, it was fine as well. After stalling once, I got a P0140 code.

I just changed my MAF and so far so good. I haven't stalled and the SES light is still off after I reset it. It has only been a day, but I feel pretty sure that the MAF was the problem.

yeah, that sounds exactly like my situation. I'm going into Austin this weekend so I'm going to stop by and pick up a MAF from DaveB and see if that shouldn't fix the problem. Thanks for your help!!

That's who I got my MAF from. I checked around and DaveB had the best price. Besides that, he is also great to deal with. We got so tied up talking about Maximas that he almost forgot to charge me for the part! Spend a couple of minutes talking to him, he has lots of great ideas and shares our enthusiasm for our cars. Best customer service I ever got from a Nissan dealer. I won't hesitate to call him again when I need something else.

hey guys, the code I pulled a while back was a P0171, which says the the "fuel system for Bank1 was too lean..." The SES light has since gone on and off about 5 times and is currently off but let me know what you think....Thanks for all of your input so far, it is definately VERY helpful!!

There is a Crank Position Sensor recall out. It will either make your car crank forever and not turnover or stop running once it has started. I am taking mine in tomorrow for that.
