ECM help, got my MAF sensor ne to reprogram ECM
I Just installed the MAF, my battery is out I dont wanna put it in yet. There is a warning that came with the sensor that says
"this unit requires special ECM reprogramming of the vehicle. Refer to TSB NTB01-036/ITB01-029 for the special ECM ID code that must be entered in the ASIST ECM Data screen to download the correct data. This data is not available through the regular MY/Model lookup."
What the heck is this, please help???

the update is not necessary for the sensor to work. i replaced mine w/o the update and have no issues for about 9 months. the general consensus is that you dont need it but if you want to pay nissan for it then you can.
Similar problem
Just before I replaced the MAF, I pulled the battery overnight and reset everything. When I reinstalled, MAX ran poorly. I took to Thompson (PA - Dealer) and they reset for free. I actually gave them the MAF to put in for me while they had it, and it only cost me $93 for installation. ($128 for the part). Max runs good now.
there is a difference between resetting the ses light and have the ecu flashed for an updated part. the maf only consists of 2 security hex and 1 connector. it should take less than 5 minutes to change.
resetting the ecu can be done by taking the negative cable off the battery and leaving it overnight..good to do after making modifications so your ecu can relearn. However, reflashing the ECM is something that only your dealer can do. The ECM update is not necessary for the MAF to work properly, however some people have reported pretty decent gains in their fuel economy from doing so. My dealer quoted me 85 bucks to do it. I do like getting more MPG, but not worth it IMHO...
Changed my MAF in my 2000 I30 almost a year ago. Did not reprogram/flash the ECU, and no problems. Just had the neg. battery terminal off while I replaced the MAF. MPG and performace have all improved!
