As I was going to work this morning, this TL-S pulls up in front of me at a traffic light. He revs his engine so I said let see if the MAX can keep up, (no doubt he can beat the crap at of me due to having a slushbox so I turn off the OD. As the light turn green a floored it, we were neck on neck then MAX pulls out, he was on the rear of my bumper until we hit around 90-100 then we slowed down due to incoming traffic. That made my day!!! I know he could have beaten my @$$ if he wanted to, but with an auto I was surprised, maybe it could be the driver?. To all the MAX owners it is possible to beat the TL-S or keep up with it at least. No MODS as of yet!

an auto max vs a TL-S...and the auto max kept up, let alone pulled out? Wow! Are you sure it was an S? Anyhow, good race. The TL is auto also, so I don't think driver skill is a big factor unless he doesn't know how to floor it. Oh well tho.....nice job.

You do realize that this has no effect on your acceleration at all.

Maybe this Acura guy are those people that steals 'Type-S' emblems off of real TL-S cars and pastes it on his.

Tl-s isn't all that fast

I test drove a TL-s last weekend, and guess what,

My 5-speed Max is faster.

I put it in manual mode, and I floored it, and guess what, the damn thing doesn't pull. In first gear, my car is MUCH faster. Us 5-speed owners know how hard the Maxima pulls in first gear, especially the last l500 revs. (5000 - 6500).

Second gear, my car is still faster. and third, fourth, and fifth. It is no match.

conclusion? , A 5-speed Maxima will tear up a TL-S.

And by the way, the TLs have TERRIBLE gearing.
It has double over drive, and the overall spacing is not goood at all. And those suckers are heavy. 3500 lbs.

The TL nees lower second and third gear, and it needs 1:1 fourth for usual highway passing.

5spds are always better than slushboxes

Standard cars always lose less power through the transmission. Typically, they lose about 15% versus a automatics 25%. plus you can rev it up and dump the clutch for a better start. Plus, 5spd's have the advantage of gearing. Even if both cars have 5spds(auto. and standard) the standard car will have the better gearing.

That is why a standard will be faster than a slushbox. Even w/ more hp.

Honda has one advantage...

A hell of a lot of aftermarket companies target Honda engines. The TL-S is likely to get some smooth performance upgrades in the near future. A Mugen exhaust and a good intake could do wonders...plus JetChip will probably do an ECU upgrade. I say, be careful on getting cocky around the TL-S unless you have a 5-speed and know you can drive.

I would love to see a TL-S on a track one day and really see how the match-up goes. I own a 6th generation Accord (V-6) and have never been impressed with the acceleration, but haven't driven the 3.2L in the Acura yet. Based on my experience with the 3.0L, ArticMax's description of the TL-S test drive sounds like an accurate description if much of the tranny has remained similar.

Re: 5spds are always better than slushboxes

Care to test that theory on a Supra TT at BPU at the line when he's brake torquing and holding about 18psi? Your theory is true but only in a general sense. The words "always" kinda kill it for ya.

I don't suppose you know why top fuel dragsters are automatics to you?

Has no effect from a stop and when flooring it. I've seen my OD kick in at midrange. ...and I love turning it off at highway speeds.

Should have Torque Braked in front of that TL-s!

Re: Tl-s isn't all that fast

Just by looking at the 0-60 and 1/4 mi. times from magazines the opposite seems to be true. In the May 01 MotorTrend they tested a TL Type S and got the following:
0-60mph 6.28sec
1/4 mi. 14.72@97.6 mph

For comparison a 2k Maxima SE 5spd was tested in 7/99
0-60mph 6.7sec
1/4 mi. 15.1@94.4 mph

Looking at these numbers, the TL-S is faster.
What gives then?

Re: Re: Tl-s isn't all that fast

I hate most Acura/Honda drivers... they all think that there cars are g-ds gift to the world and that there is nothing better no matter how much $$ it is... and they have these such bad attitudes... i cant say all cause i kno for sure there are nice guys.. but i mean come on we all kno how they act... not meaning to cause flames either but im just venting a little...
those TL-S people on their forum are a good example of how they can be A$$HOLE$

I really hate to say this man, not to break your heart or anything.

Most of the time, when people are flooring the gas trying to race me, I NEVER FLOOR THE THROTTLE! I just keep up with him at a fast pace, but not flooring it.Then when the car who wanted to race me got ahead of me, he usually thinks he beat me. But actually, I just never ran my best.

I raced many people and most of the time, I don't really care about winning or loosing, I just wanted to go faster, but not really caring about who got to head first.
