My 00 maxima has bag mpg (less than 300 miles/tank)

Hey guys, can you please help me out. I just bought my car a few weeks ago with 95K miles.

I've looked around the forums already and i think my maxima is getting a very poor mpg. Im getting even less than 300 miles to a tank. The last 2 times i have filled up the car with SUPER. My driving isnt crazy and at most i took the car to 3 rpm (maybe 4 but only like 3 times). So im wondering if you guys know what the problem could be.

Im hearing to use some fuel injector cleaner. Anything else i should do or check. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You

A lot of people that drive in NYC only average around 240-280 a tank. It can very well be the area you drive in. If you do a lot of stop and go then it could just be your area and not your car. If your area isnt that bad then do the following. Check your tire pressure and make sure its atleast 32psi all around, do an oil and filter change, fuel injector cleaner, wheel alightnment, and maybe some other things i left out. But this should give you an idea.

true... I have always wondered if there was that much difference in the mpg for the 3.0 or 3.5? Im sure it's not much, but I only get around 350 if I take an all day highway trip and thought that was bad?

I get around 300 per tank on mixed city and not overly extended highway mileage. Sucks like mad. On my 94 I could get 400 a tank.

250/tank.. tons of stop and go (sigh... miami) some highway... I never shift above 3k rpm unless i gun it for fun which is like 3-4 times per gas tank... It might be your area...

So... does having a 3.5 vs a 3.0 make for better mpg?

From my experience, I got much better gas mileage out of the 3.0.

Here's some data for comparison...
Last night drove from Detroit to Philly averaging 75mph. Fuel stop at 350 miles, put in 13.8 gallons = 25mpg on 87 octane. Finished drive (250 more miles) at same speed, have about half tank left (9 gallons) = 27mpg on 93 octane. BTW car is loaded with Christmas presents.

air filter, plugs, pcv, fuel injector cleaner, seafoam/carb cleaner, oil change and filter, and reset your ecu, that would be a good list to do at this point, on top of chassis greasing, tranny service and whatnot, but as far as fuel economy a simple tune-up like above should clear that up, however with those miles i'd have a look around the car anyway and check all the systems.

Depends if u are driving in city or highway. In mostly city driving, 300 miles on a tank -assuming you're letting it come down so that only 14-15 or so gallons are needed to refill it completely- is not bad. I get 310-330 regularly, but that's with 40% back-road (no traffic light, but some hills & shifting) driving.

It also depends on where u live....if you live in an area where oxygenated fuels are required in the winter -meaning, fuels with up to 10% ethanol- that will cost you 5% to 8% in fuel mileage right off the bat......

which of the things that you guys said can i do myself?

and thanks again

Yea i get about 350-400 mpg per tank. I dont live in the city and not really all highway driving either. I would suggest doing a tune up with both belts changes, plugs, injector & carb cleaners, and oil change.
i got better gas milege after i did that at 51K.

how many miles do i have left after my gas tank light goes on???

i got some fuel injector cleaner which said to put it in on a full tank. Well i did that and im just finishing that gas tank. And now my light for more fuel went off @ 240 miles driven. Im hoping that next time it will be a better mpg.

Well anyways.. how many miles do i have left to go???

ive never gotten less than 400 mpg, but i live in an area where it is not much stop and go at all (out in the country) and ive never gotten within 2 gallons of the fuel tank capacity even though my dte said "-- --" which as apparently less than 5 miles because thats when it started to say that....but if you were doing city driving, im sure that would be drastically different

ditto mine sees about the same stop and go usually, because my towns small, but populated, and i only drive about 8 to 10 miles to work everyday with it, and i gun it alot more, the most ill get is about 270 so it ranges from 250-270 with mine at 100k and a 5spd, if i dont get into it as much as i do, it goes up around 270-290 per tank, thats if i drove like you said, only guning 3 or 4 times per tank
