The OEM struts are not really designed for in insert replacement, however there is one available. Most replacement strut units for the Maxima are sold as a whole and are cheaper to buy that way then the insert that is available.
Koni makes an insert for the Maxima strut. Installation involves cutting the top off of the OEM strut and dumping out the contents. Then drilling a hole in the bottom to secure the Koni insert with a bolt.
Honestly, Koni's are excellent adjustable shocks, but I'd much rather buy a direct replacement unit then do that modification to allow an insert to be used. It's to bad Koni doesn't make a direct replacement strut for our cars. The Koni shocks for the rear are a direct bolt on unit. However, the short coming with them is that they can only be adjusted while off the car and disassembled.
