Evap Cansiter...600$ ??

Just took my 02 Max gle into a Nissan Dealership to find out why the check engine light came on, I know I should of went to AZ but a insurance company is involved and had to take it to a dealer..

Anywho, they just called and said the evaporator canister was leaking, and everything around it was rusted out.

He told me 3 part

Evap Canistor 173$
Something I forget 85$
and a bolt or something for 35$

with labor im looking at 550-600$ which im not real happy about.

Check engine light is on, and does not go off, can anyone tell me anything about this problem?? should I get it fixed? should I wait? Get another opinion?

Any help or info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Oh Yeah, Insurance isn't paying for it....nice

The reason

I took it to a nissan dealer because I just got my car back from beeing fixed (front end collison), I was parked and someone hit me doing 50 mph,

I get my car back after being in the shop for a month and a half and 2 days later the check engine lite comes on, Obviously I assumed it was something related to the accident, and if it was his insurance would pay for it...

It is in the rear of the car, so I guess im SOL

Nissan Dealership worthless

Well, just picked up my car, the people at the Nissan dealership were complety worthless, not only could they not tell me what the evaperator canistor did, they couldnt even tell me if HAS TO or SHOULD be replaced.

All they told me was, " We think it has something to do with the fuel system, or mixing fuel". Needless to say, Nissan USA will be getting a call from me after work.

Can anyone tell me anything about the evaporater canistor?

600 dollars for labor ? Damn I have done those in like 20 min at Nissan on 4th gens... its pretty similar to it.

Evap canister stores fuel vapors inside, when the engine is runing, solenoids in the EVAP system- click and turn on and off, letting fuel vapors INTO the canister from the tank- this is the canister vent shut valve, and then you got a purge controll solenoid in the system- usually under the hood, which basically at specified times lets these fuel vapors into the intake manifold for the engine to- reburn them.

But don't take my word for any of this, I don't have any clue bout cars at all - please visit my homepage

I'm not sure but I think the EVAP canister is considered part of the emissions system which makes it their resposnibility under the 3/36k?

In NJ and NYC they do a test that involves the EVAP system and if it fails the test ends. If it fails to respond to their system unde OBD II (which I've also seen) the say talk to the car maker.

hope that helps.

It is part of the emissions system. The EVAP canister stores fuel vapors which form when fuel boils into a gaseous state in the fuel tank, e.g. when your car is sitting around in a parking lot in the dead heat of summer. These vapors are purged into the engine through a line going up to the engine bay which feeds into the intake manifold I believe. The EVAP canister is lined with charcoal I think.
It really sounds like you're being taken for a ride to me...

Thanks for the Replys

Exactly the kind of info I was looking for, the 3 parts I was told I needed are
1 Vent control Valve
1 Evap Canister
1 Canister Bracket

Parts about $300
Laber about $250

I was told the bracket was very rusted and that was a sign that the canister had been leaking for some time.

The question is..... Should I have this done for the 550-600$, should I call another shop (non nissan dealer)

Should I ignore it?

Believe me, I hate, and I mean HATE seeing that stupid ses light, but I don't have an extra 600 laying around, especially after the Holidays...

Thanks again all, your feedback has been great

Just cause the bracket is rusted don't mean its leaking. Anything on a Nissan will rust under a car- especially brackets like these. They need to veriffy with a vaccum pump which part of the system is leaking. You test parts of the system individually, to make sure that its not a solenoid- purge, vent shut valve, you will be able to tell if there is a leak. Its complicated to write it out without pics, but once there is a leak somewhere, the vacumm will not hold and it will drop. Another way to tell is by using a smoke machine- by hooking it up to the purge line at the intake manifold of the vehicle. This will inject the system with smoke- you need to go into Consult and turn on all the solenoids- so that all the smoke makes its way around the EVAP system. Once thats done, if there is no leak then you need to look at other parts of the system. 1456 code indicates that there is a problem with the EVAP system, but it really means there is a small leak on the tank side of the EVAP- so it could be a punctured gas tank, ORVR valve, filler neck. The computer basically determined that between the charcoal canister and the fuel tank/filler neck- there is a small leak. You can't go off rust when it comes down to EVAP leaks, WTF kinda diagnosis is that ? Find another dealer, I bet they only specialize in BRAKES and oil changes let alone some major azz **** like this.

Thanks BlackBird

I was planning on calling Nissan Usa and telling them I want my 78 bucks back (what I was charged for the diag.)

WOuld I be better going back and telling them they need to be more specific about the problem, and mention these tests (smoke) and etc.??

I am in a bind, I recently moved from Pittsburgh PA, to Richmond Va, so my trusted Mechanic is about 400 miles aways, he told me most likly the dealership is trying to F me, and If I can get it to him he would take care of me...(Parts at his cost and big reduction in labor) probably around 250$ total if all those parts need replaced.

Regardless, Is this something I can make a 400 mile trip home, without worrying about it, or should I find a immediate solution?

The Nissan Dealership was Pence Nissan, in Richmond, Pretty big repair and Body shop, looks very proffesional, but seems the employees are clueless.

Like I said, the guy actually told me he didnt know what the evap canister did, and wether or not it was safe to drive, he then charged me 78 dollars....

Did they reset the light? It seems like i get a 0456 (small leak) code once a year when it gets cold outside. But after i reset it, it stays off.

As for being safe to drive I'd say yes, Although NNA probably would say no. After all you are leaking gas, albeit a very, very miniscule amount.

When the evap went on my 1997 SE it was under $300 to fix and one part.. i never saw the check engine light again. Maybe these people want to run with your money... Check other dealers and see if it can be done under warranty.. some people look the other way if you know what i mean... Try to find someone human.. i did when i replaced my bose radio at 36600 miles and warranty finished at 36000...

psu711,

Make sure you tell them exactly what I told you about diagnostics. This is my comment
to Paralyse "If you are taking this car to a Nissan Dealer make sure you INSIST they follow the
diagnostics procedures outline in the Factory Service Manual section Engine Control
System Section EC page 417-431 (DTC P0456 EVAP Control System)" They will use
CONSULT II to verify all electronics, settings, check vacuum lines individually and
ofcourse the hardware. It should take them a better part of a day to do a proper
diagnostics. Good Luck

Mikelly,

Would that be covered under the 78$ i paid for the diag. to begin with, they only had my car for about an hour or 2 so im sure they didnt do much.

What I am asking....If I print out your suggestion and go back there and tell them to follow this..... Will they tell me I owe them more money, or should that have been done for my 78 bucks

I came across this tsb

http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../NTB00-085.htm

Now, seeing as I could barely understand what they were saying, could anyone help by maybe summarizing the bottom for me?

What is the chart they show at the bottom, when they talk about "claims",

I have 51k miles, Im assuming I cant do anything with a warrenty ( It would be nice to be wrong)

psu711,

The $78 bones you paid should of cover all the diagnostics they needed to do. http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../NTB00-085.htm As for this
link, I have the document and I used it to clean the various components listed. I solved
my problems within two hours. After resetting the ECU, I don't get any codes pop up
anymore.
