weird smell

Ok, i was driving on the expressway..and i really wasn't going that fast..maybe 75 or 80 and everything was normal...then when i got off all i could smell was a terrible egg smell almost. I have read that that smell is a problem with the cat. But the weird thing is when iw as driving back i wasn't on the expressway and was doing about 60 and i never smelled a thing. Then later ont he expressway doing about the same speed i didn't smell anything. Neither of these times did i drive more differently then the other i wasn't really reving or pushing the engine. I dont know if it makes a diff but i also only smelled it when i got off and not when i was driving. After i got off i could smell it as i was driving though. Plesae help.

I hear they have changed some gas formulation to include more sulfites. This could explain it...

It's your catalytic converter. That's why you smell eggs. And hopefully you wasn't on a date like I was when it happend to me..LOL You can also check by looking under the car to see if you have a string hanging from the CAT, if so your cat is your cat is in bad shape. It's sound crazy, but it accurately works.!!!!!

since it just happened that once. it could have been just some foul smell in the area due to a factory or a landfill. i get that alot when driving to the airport near the factories and sewage treatment plants but also have noticed it spottily other places. could have been from a car ahead of you too. i wouldnt start looking at a bad cat until it is more consistant.

Nine times out of ten, it's the catalytic converter.

i have smelled it before..but only when i was driving it very hard and practically red lining in 1,2,3rd gear. and it usually goes away pretty fast. Maybe it was the sewage because i haven't smelled it again since and i have been doing both expressway driving and regualr driving. I hope its not that cat. if it is are they expensive to replace?

it's usually the cat, i'd try switching fuel brands first, but if it persists, it's def. the cat

When you rev your car you computer send a signal to give more fuel and sametimes it is to rich produsing that smell. Almoust all cars do that same more some less.

That string is just a ground for the catalytic converter. Dealer told me that it really doesnt do anything and not to worry about it. Mines hanging and have no smell and cat is working fine.

This is what my neighbor, who's a Porsche mechanic, told me. It's a "left over" from the days when first generation O2 sensors were one wire and needed to be grounded and it's not really needed. The "string" is just a grounding wire (if you look at it it's braided). After he explained this, I cut mine off after it came lose from the exhaust pipe. This was about a year ago and nothing bad has happened.

As for the smell, if it's not the Citgo gasoline you've been using (fairly high sulphur), it's the cat as everyone else has said.

Signs of a failing cat is the rotten egg smell, hence no cat gives you the smell.....Think before you post next time

There is strong smell from Your car, sorry. But now that I think of it, I believe the smell is more related to the internals of the cat burning off, I stand corrected sorta......

exactly!!
i think its a "your cat is going bad" smell. its not the smell of the exhaust that isnt getting cleaned since the cat is bad. if that was the case we would get that smell
