Cold Start Noise - Chatter?

Recently with the cold weather I have been noticing an odd noise when I start the car up that I did not notice last winter. It doesnt happen in warmer temps and if the engine is warm it is not hear at start up. It sounds almost like running sand paper back and forth quickly on wood but to the beat of the engine. It lasts for 30 seconds to a minute then disappears. Is it indicative of something harmful? Has anyone heard something similar before?
