HLSD rules

Just felt like making a thread about how awesome hlsd is. I just had mine installed a few weeks ago similar to what honda eater did. It was pouring rain, and i definatly felt a situation or 3 where it would've been shady before, but much more confident as far as slipping on the wet. Nah i wasn't speeding, just doing about 60 mph or so, usually i'm going like 50 because we all know just a drop on the road makes our cars bug out usually. Damn, what can i say, even with my so-so goodyear rsa's, i'm finally feeling OK about driving the maxima in the elements. Any of you 6 speed guys that didn't get this as an option, really, really should think about it. I'm definatly loving it.

I did the flywheel and clutch at the same time. JWT stuff. I'm being extra careful to break in the new clutch, I can't wait till racing season opens up, i wanna see what kinda numbers this baby will do. Expect some timeslips from me this spring . Anyone else besides honda eater and I that did the differential swap? How u guys liking it so far?

I've had my car since November and just realized last week that I have the HLSD option. I'm damn glad because the car is bare bones otherwise. Please explain again how it helps us with handling and driving confidence. I was under the impression that it was basically like a posi rearend in a Chevy muscle car. Thanks

Did you do the install or did you have someone else do it for you? I'd like to get it done, but not sure I trust just "anyone" to do the install. Opening up the trans and setting gear backlash and pinion depth is a fine science all it's own. What was the final cost for your setup, labor and parts?

Thnaks,

helps allow both wheels to get maximum power to the ground especially out of turns or in straight line acceleration. i.e. when coming out of a turn and hitting the gas, instead of the inside wheels slipping, the hlsd will apply more tq to the wheel with more traction (outside wheel) in order to maintain optimum grip and acceleration of the drive wheels.

HLSD can't be used with Autos because of traction control. If you could disable traction control and upgrade the trans you would have a nice setup!

Helical Limited Slip Differential is different from the clutch type eaton-style positraction units used in GM rear drives. Posi-Traction is their TM for the Viscous Limited Slip Differential, which is what you'll find in most rear drive limited slip. But when dealing with RWD there are more options. Limited slip, full locker, air locker, spool, welding your spider gears if you're poor, etc

I am planning on doing something similar when my clutch goes out. I will definitely be putting in an HLSD and some upgraded clutch and possibly the 4.13 gear from the 6th gen... and remotely possibly a lightened flywheel. I dont know when my clutch is gonna go out but hopefully it sticks around for another 6 months or so (2yrs old 31k) when I should have a lot more disposable income.

Man that would be awesome to get that all done at once....

I knew that my 2k2 had an LSD when I roasted the tires and left two nice black strips instead of one peglegged burnout mark

Arek,
I know the 02-03's don't have the HLSD with the Automatic. I can't speak for sure about the VLSD in the earlier versions, but understanding what traction control is and how it functions, it would seem highly unlikely for Nissan to use both. In either case if you can't speak properly don't bother trying to write it

I didn't do the labor, jeff from maximum tuning did all of the labor. I priced out the stuff from Dave B, I won't discuss prices but give him a call for a quote on the Diff. Remember you need to buy the bearings and synchro seperately. I'm sure he can get everything, we had to resort to a local dealer for the latter since i didn't know i needed it, and he took my car in right around before christmas time. It ended up taking like almost a week since shipping was all screwy. I guess including labor i'll admit it cost me over 2 grand, i rather not mention prices online though, that's for the vendors to deal with.

As far as increasing confidence, at times when the car was only gripping with one wheel, the other wheel gets to grip with more force (the other wheel which will grip). I'm not an engineer, so i'll defer the dynamics of the setup to someone here with a better understanding ; ).

Thanks mjg. I pretty much know the prices for parts. I guess I was just looking at what the shop would charge for labor. I had an outstanding offer from SR20DEN to do it for $350, the only problem is he's in Charlotte, NC. Not exactly around the corner from us!! I might still take him up on it though if I can't find anyone closer at a reasonable price. Enjoy the HLSD and new clutch. How is the Aluminum flywheel? Any problems with erratic idle or drivability?
