You will not get any 2005 VW for under 20 grand. SRT-4 is best bang for your buck for performance but I don't think I would ever buy a car for performance reasons alone if it was going to be my only car.
Edit: There is a forum specifically for posts just like this.

I would say neither, but if you are going to go with a better looking car I would choose the gti....the srt-4 is ugly as *** and its a damn $10k neon with a turbo and a gay a$$ body kit
. But I agree with ibag8rfan, you are not going to get a VW that cheap.

best of luck, shoppen for a new car. word of adivce when u buy the car whatever it may be... save ur self the going back and forth with the dealership and just offer them a little profit over invoice, 200 to 500 is fair game. make sure u look at the invoice with ur own eyes!
also check out the ratings on the neon you like. it may be the bang for the buck now... but a lot of banging is gonna be happening down the road.
check out the new SER Altima 6spd tranny or the Sentra SER (yeah i konw its ugly) but with a kit and 6spd tranny you cant go wrong. you can also throw a turbo on this and have it more reliable then the neon any time of the day.

The Neon can be made to run 12s for cheap, but it is a POS car. My friend had a stage 2 turbo on his and then he totaled it (along with his life for the most part). Dangerous little cars. I am not into the GTIs at all. I think VW is a little overpriced. I would be tempted to look at the new Chevy Cobalt SS! They are good looking cars with superchargers. GM superchargers are awesome to modify and you can make SICK power with them.

In my opinion both car are POS, the Gti is going to cost you and arm and a leg for maintenance specially if you keep it for more than 3 years do we have to talk about the Neon a pos with a powefull engine, I bought one dodge in my life and I learn my lesson. Keep the max and mod the hell out of it or trade it for a 2k2-3.
I wouldnt buy a domestic car period. And "New" cars are overrated, why pay the 20% you gonna lose in the first year when you can buy a 1 or 2 year old used car. I'm looking at a 2002 Acura 3.2TL type s and its right at 20k, with 18k miles and its a "Certified" (warranty) used car. Just my opinion, but dont waste your money on a 2005, and especially a domestic car.
sad to say but VW reliability is much worse than most domestic cars. As far as performance goes, the srt-4 is the best bang for the buck. I dont know why alot of people hate on this car, they are actually a blast to drive. But I also agree that look at something a year or two old. And dont pay 28k for a friggin altima.

Since you're asking for opinions:
srt-4 in orange: It may be faster than a maxima, but all it is is a cheaply-built NEON with a big engine. No matter what kind of badging you put on it, or engine you put on it, or color you paint it, or big tail on the trunk - IT IS STILL A NEON. So ask yourself "Do I really want to sell my maxima to get a Neon?" SRT-4's are fast, but
IMO, especially in orange.GTI...you will have all the same reliability (especially electrical) problems that plagues all Jettas and Golfs (and most VWs in general). Add that to the fact that a GTI is slower than a max, smaller, and every 16-year old already has one. Why?
Either of these cars is a large downgrade from a maxima, so why would you want to do this? If it's a "smaller" car you want, I'd suggest go for a WRX at least. It is quick enough, has AWD, and has much better build quality/reliability than the SRT or GTI. Plus, there are tons of available upgrades for the car/engine, and you could get one a couple years old for under 20k....
just my 2 cents....
find a new car competitvely priced under 20k, that runs 14s stock, pulls to redline, starts pulling at 3000, that you can put 7' cd towers in the back, a sick, and i mean sick stereo from the factory(i don't car what anyone says, the Bose is the best factory unit out there, it blows the monsoon away, and it's clear at full volume), has leather, sunroof, and it's the best looking sedan out there. as long as I don't look behind me i forget its got 2 extra doors anyway. And besides, what other car can you take out to beat up all the compacts and lots of muscle cars........with your seat heater on no less. I'm sorry but there's no comparo, the max wins. You'll be stepping backwards in a Vdub or srt-4. Other than a 2.7T or 4.2 there's no VW/Audi motor that will touch a max. R32s won't even hold a candle, especially above 80mph. And it's stil a neon, so you'll have to get used to the cheapest quality interior, and get a mouth guard so you don't break your teeth. I guess i'm a little biased, but i wouldn't trade down, always have to get a better cat than the last, unless in the max's case, it's hard to top. You have to look to a few elite Bavarians, and a select two from Japan. There's only one choice, that's why this forum is so big.
Yeah if i were you...i would get a used max this one : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...519433876&rd=1
is a great deal..its most likely under 20, because he said the NADA value is 19.5k and he's selling it for "thousands less" IMO thats a much better deal than a POS neon and a low-reliability gti....i say either this, or keep the max you got...
