2000 Max just installed Addco Rear Sway bar w/ question??
I just got the Addco rear sway bar installed this afternoon.
Situation(s):
1. Driving with (2) front passengers going over potholes. The rear doesn't make any noise.
2. With (2) passengers in the back seat going over certain potholes i hear a clunking noise coming from only the rear right tire side.
3. Could this be, because of the sway bar install? and if so why only one side?? and not noticeable when no passengers in the back??
4. Could this have anything to do with my rear right strut/springs/suspension damaged, or shot??? and if its that case, how can i tell????
THank you all in advance
Steve

It's the right rear bracket. If you look from under the rear axle, you will see where that bracket will hit when the suspension is compressed. Slide the bracket toward the center of the car so it will clear. You'll need to move it in about 8 inches from the 90 degree bend. Then move the other side in as well so both sides are even.

yeah! other than that rear right clunk its f'in great. i had the stillen fstb put on almost 2 years ago and it was great already. finally got around to getting the rear installed took out just before the blizzard to try it out. and wow!!! almost no more body roll on certain corners. and with the michelin pilot sport a/s its just splendid.
Now back to my question before. I had a mechanic install them for me. i printed the instructions out from the how to here. now if i want to clear this clunking how do i go about asking them or telling them how to fix it????
and why is the noise only from the right rear tire side only??
i was playing around a few days ago pre install and that shouldn't hurt the car right? it was snowing and i was doing donuts and just playing around in the snow.
thanks

The Stillen sway bar clamps are not well designed and hit the floor boards when the rear suspension is compressed. If you move them back, this avoids the problem but also makes the bar less responsive.
The Addco bar doesn't have this problem, so which bar do you really have?

It actually depends on where its banging. When I had to do it, the brackets were too far forwards, and I had to move them back, in essence "tightening" the bar. If the banging is from the center, then you need to make sure those brackets are exactly 4" from the bend.

On the Addco/Progress bars you adjust the brackets by sliding them L and R. Not really a whole lot of room to slide them forwards/backwards. Maybe it's diff w/the Stillen, I dunno...but he has the Addco.

Its the Addco that i have. So basically its standing facing forward of car, under of course, i move that right bracket L or R, a few inches?? or that 4" from the 90 degree bend?? after i do so, do i do the same for the left one as well?? 4" too?
I probably have to wait until Tuesday at least. This snow has got my car all snowed in, and i'm not taking it out. Didn't know i could have so much fun in a 1990 4Runner, manual 4WD, and i can't believe its my mothers. LOL.
thanks everyone for the help.
P.S. on a side note if i wanted to upgrade my suspension system, what does everyone recommend. I don't need $$$, just reliable, bang for the buck, and better than stock. Also can someone explain shocks/struts/springs. I know them individually but not how they go together thats all.

Max: measure 4" from the 90 degree bend, and make sure you do that on both sides. Ive installed 12 of these things, and never had one clunk.

Does anyone have a picture of the problem area, so i can show the mechanic? of the exact piece that needs to be moved??
thanks so much

That's funny, I installed my Stillen first try and have NEVER had banging...I guess the extra $20 wasn't a "waste of $$".

I believe I paid around $157 for my brand new Stillen and the Addcos were $120 or so?
Okay, $37 and I'll keep mine with no knocking, no squeaky rubber/urethane bushings, or bushing period that wear out.

I'd gladly pay double the Progress for the Stillen instead, it's one of the few pieces they make worth the price.
You're right the "adjustability" aspect of the Stillen is BS, however IMO, it's a cleaner/simpler design with less areas for problems/wearing.
