ghetto air box

as of now, i am too poor to afford a CAI. and i've heard a few things on the "ghetto air box." anyway, i just wanted to try it out for kicks, so do any of you know of any "how to's" for this. i dont want to do anything permanent (i dont want to cut holes in anything under my hood.)

i saw one where a guy used a wire to keep the filter in place...but i was thinking...if you were to hit a bump or make a sharp turn, wouldnt the filter fall out of place. and also, isnt it very plausible that there are tiny openings along the filter allowing junk to get in?

believe me, if i had the money i'd be all over a berk intake. thanks guys.

I created the coat hanger ghetto air box. There should be a how to in the how to section. You have to make sure you get a very thick piece of coat hanger. I never had a problem of the filter moving around. I would check it about everyday at first and it never moved. It works great.

I tried the coat hanger thing last weekend. The first time I turned on the car after I installed it is sounded TERRIBLE - rattling and rasping away. I immediatly turned it off, and reinstalled my regular filter holder. The horrid sound could have been because I had also unhooked my battery to work on my power seats between when I put in the hanger, re-mounted the negative terminal and started the car, but I haven't been brave enough to try it again. Any thoughts? I made sure the hanger was in there pretty tight...

^ i disagree. in my case the gab provided a noticeable improvement in response at highway speeds and a negligible decrease in low end torque. the trade-off was well worth it.

the coat hanger gab when done properly is the best intake mod imo since it provides the same benefits (or better) as an aftermarket intake with the ability to return to stock right away. it's just not as pretty as the aftermarket intakes.

The coat hanger thing seems like a lot of trouble. I went the way of a PAB - ported air box - I drilled (3) 2 inch holes in the front of the box, glued in desk grommets from Lowes and viola! I get more air when I need it and when I take the car in for warranty work I put the grommet plugs in place so the box looks stock.

It's never been proven to add gains. But its free, I switch back and forth, who knows what it does besides sound. I don't like the wail of the open air intakes, the GAB is sublte.

bladrnr, why does it seem like trouble?

I tried the GAB with a franken midpipe, it was loud, too loud foe me so I went back to stock, now with GAB, and most recenty, I've been stock for about a week, haven't driven it much, but with the headers, the GAB sounds really good IMO.

The ported air box idea came from SR20DEN, I can't claim the original idea. I used desk grommets from Lowes Home Improvement. Go to the nail and screw aisle, check the sliding drawer section of specialty parts, and a few drawers will be labled grommets and other parts. The desk grommet is a round sleeve used to cover a hole in an office desk that is used to thread computer cables through. Most of us have seen one, but probably didn't know what it was called. The grommet has a center piece that pops out to expose the hole. It really cleans up the holes drilled in the air box.
