MAF sensor....need advice

In past threads I have told people my problem I have the surging/lurching problem best known as the bad MAF sensor problem. When my SES light came on it was system lean bank 1. The SES light went off after I disconnected the battery and reset ECU....car is slower now. They said it could be a number of problem not 100% sure its the MAF sensor. Do you think I should buy a MAF sensor from Dave B for $80 and give it a shot? (i have 101,000 miles) Thanks

damn thats a lot of miles. I cleaned my MAF the other day with a vacuum. I just unscrewed it from the cylinder, pulled it out and positioned the vacuum so that air was forced through the MAF the opposite of normal direction. I had a little bit of a hesitation at certain rpm, and its is mostly gone now. If I were you, I'd try this or something like it before I dropped 80 bucks on a new MAF.

Its in the black tube that connects the accordion hose from the intake manifold to the airbox where the air filter is...

In the picture above, the MAF housing is the piece between the accordion hose and the stock airbox, it has the gray wire harness going into it. The MAF is llocated in that housing. That's a picture from a 2002 Max, but it should be similar for you. Hope that helps.

This picture is the MAF housing removed... ignore all the Injen junk on it...

Btw, talk to DaveB about the right MAFs to use for your car because I've heard that things are different now and the new MAFs for all the 5th and 5.5 Gens need ECU re-programming (not resetting) at the dealership. But don't quote me on this... its just what I think I've seen on here...

the thing that was cleaned, charlie, was the entire MAF tube or just the device in the tube. What solvent is recommended?

I'm not sure, but it'd make sense to me that ya clean the MAF itself, not the housing... although you could probably try to clean the screen on the housing too... don't take my word for it though...

With the car off, I just spray from intake cleaner on the wire in the center. Make sure you wait for it to dry and with the car off.

hey man, usually if there is something wrong with the mass air flow sensor you would get a code for it--havent really seen the code that you got. would have to look at a couple of things like o2 sensors(see the voltage range), the grams/sec on air flow meter to see if they are within specs. also if you use a k&n air filter be careful when oiling the filter cuz over oiled filters tend to ruin Maf sensors. and I would not rec cleaning the sensor--you could ruin the filament inside the sensor--thats just my opinion.

So, the MAF is that floss looking string in the black cylinder between the air filter and the accordion before the intake???

Just call daveB and tell him you need a new maf. He will sell you a 5thgen and you transfer the wire.

When a MAF goes, it usually goes. You should know it. When my went I could not rev above 2K RPM and then the engine died and would not stay started. IT will hesitate at certain RPMs. If it is hesitating (lurching) it is you MAF 90% of the time.

Nobody on here can give you a diagnostic test via keyboard, so either take it to a shop of buy the MAF. You are only going to get speculation upon speculation and more confused.

You can get it at www.jerryromenissan.com. When ordering use the promotional code "maxima" to get a 12% discount. It should be around $95 shipped.
