6-speed on a VQ30?
6-speed on a VQ30?
Is there any way that I can swap a 6-speed into my VQ30? I originally planned on swapping in a VQ35, but I have since changed my mind, but I would really not mind a 6-speed tranny? Any info would be great...

Yes, it is possible, but unless you swap the '04 6spd for the shorter final drive, it's probably not worth it unless you just want a taller hwy gear. Plus, you could add a '02-'03 HLSD, since Quaifes are no longer available.
BTW, this is not the easiest swap, so you'd better really want a 6spd for a purpose.

Why's that a bad idea?
The VQ35 Altima runs a 5spd....

anyway...yeah it's possible. bad idea, but possible.

My reasons....
1)Nice Hwy gear
2)Closer/better ratios then 5spd w/'04 final drive
3)$500 HLSD option
4)Can take HUGE amounts of abuse
Big negative B!TCH of a downside is the cable crap, which wouldn't be too bad if you had a donor car to use as a template but without it, it would be a nightmare.

I think people assume that shorter close ratio gears equals more time in the powerband....thats not necessarily true when it comes to vq30de's....becuz the real UMPH doesn't come until way later (5k and up)...wheres the vq35de it has power all over the place.....a 5spd will benefit fine mated with a vq30de....heck even a 5spd in a vq35de will do fine...I know when I do the 1-2 shift on my 6spd...if i peg it at redline my needle drops to around 4000-4100ish....thats the sweet spot for a vq35...but for a vq30, its still below the powerband(5k and up IMO)...the 3.5se altima has a 5spd and i'm sure it runs the quarter mile faster than a 6spd given equal drivers......becuz the 6spd is forced to shift into 4th wheres the 5spd u can hold it in 3rd......
anyway theres no real reason to change the 5spd for a 6spd......"low revs in 6th gear for the highway" you say? don't even try to save gas on a maxima....should have just bought a civic instead

You are correct on that steven. I've raced my friend when I had the VQ30 5spd in his VQ35 6spd. In 3rd gear, the cars are about the same until he has to shift in 4th and then the 5spd has the advantage.
I'm ready if someone wants to dispute that. there's probubly a video floating around here some place.

2004 6spd uses a shorter FINAL DRIVE.
Torque deficient VQ30s need closer gearing...third gear sucks especially for the 1/4mile.
Run the CarTest2000 sims and the '04 6spd is faster mated to a VQ30.

Racer...you don't have do do every MAJOR thing right at once....
you just joined the org and so far your inquiries have been about:
-VQ35 swap into a 2000
-6-speed into a 2000
oh, and your install of the "turbonator".
Perhaps you should start with some more "basic" things before you go into the most difficult things....

Oh yeah, I have just joined the forum, however, I am not in the dark when it comes to cars. I ask because I have future plans, I have a sponsor and I wanna get my plans together so that I can make a sort of checklist, ya know?

)...buteven if you're sponsored, I doubt your sponsor is going to be interested in a 3.5 swap OR 6-speed swap (unless, of course, you are sponsored by NISSAN) or a supercharger (unless you are sponsored by Stillen or Vortech)...so I'm just suggesting you go with some more "basic" mods that perhaps your "sponsor" will be willing to do.....
Yeah, I will admit that the turbonator was a POS but, my sponsorship works as follows: I have 12 large awarded to me in the form of a co-op sponsorship, with this I can do what I want to my car. I am sponsored through a wholesale company that makes it to where I can buy from a whole list of different companies.
With 12 g's, I would probably put in forged pistons, drop the cr, port and polish the heads, and throw a nice big turbo on it. And you'll probably have a couple grand left over for wheels and suspension...
Either that or get a S14 240 and throw a rb25det in it

I cannot use the money to buy a new car. I have to trick out my maxima. Plus it is a co-op sponsorship, meaning that they pay for up to 55% of the price of my mods, and I pay the other 45%. But it is still a good deal. This is the reason I am asking all of these swap questions.
There is only one person in the US that knows how to convert the 02-03 flywheel crankshaft position sensor ring gear to the 3.0L ring gear. It costs alot of $$ and he doesn't wanna do them anymore. Everything bolts right up, shifter cables are not that big of a deal. ABS modulator gets in the way of the shifter assembly, so it needs to be slightly raised up and moved towards the back of the car- IE towards the brake booster. How do I know this ? Cause I done a swap like that. Its not worth it, but if you want I got a 6spd tranny up for sale from a 03.

Keep us updated... I wanna see where 12 grand can take a Max....
I predict Sarona body kit, 20" Giovana with spinners, LED windshield washers, Tein S-techs on OEM struts, coffee can muffler, Ebay projectors, painted calipers, warped stock rotors. I think I would need a little more than 12K to realize my dream Maxima if it was stock- I'm already way past 8K in mods.
5-speed with a VQ35 is a much better combo than 6-speed with a VQ30.
Less drivetrain loss, flywheel weights 18 pounds instead of 31 pounds, it's rod-driven rather than cable, and it's been proven to handle boost and high HP numbers very well.
Also even if someone did this in their 2002-2003 (I know you guys wouldn't), I don't think there's anything to mod...

motor mount bracket needs to be welded on in order to install a 5spd tranny in a 02-03 car cause the tranny mounts up to the chassis of the car diff. On 95-01 cars in order to install a 6spd you need to cut off the stock bracket off the frame of the car, then weld on a new bracket that hooks up over the frame rail- spot weld it on. Then a bracket goes on the tranny in order to hold the tranny to the mount just welded on the car. Its really not worth doing eighter one, stay with the 5spd in the 5th gen and 6spd in the 5.5 gen.
Yes, Tilley did it. And besides, the 2002-2005 Altimas with the VQ35DE have the same 5-speed we had in our cars from 1995 to 2001. It's the same part number. Just keep 5-speed flywheel.
I don't know why anybody would do that with a VQ35DE, unless they're doing a swap like me.
