A new MAF sensor fixed everything- slugish, pinging and shifting - all gone

About 9 months ago I got my maxima at a price I could not turn down. For 3 months it was an ok car nothing special. 6 months ago I heard a pinging develop at light throddle. then 3 months ago I noticed it reving real high before shifting. then when it shifted it slamed into gear. Then over the weekend it started choking and stalling at anything over 1/3 throddle and the MIL came on.

I went to the auto parts store use the code reader and went home with a new $100 O2 sensor. I swaped it out and cleared the MIL light but nothing changed. When the MIL light came back on it was a new code, I googled for p0171 and that lead to here.

After reading countless posts about MAF sensors being junk I called around and found one at a local dealer. When I went there it was only $103 and the tech said it was a new redisiged one because the last one had so many problems. he also said the price went from $400 to $100 after the redisign. I spent all of 45 minutes in the driveway swaping it out. Now my Maxima is a little rocket. On the way to get the MIL cleared again I squeeked the tires at the stop sign. I did not mean to but I was delighted none the less.

After I got the Mil cleared I punched it getting back onto the highway and once the tires grabbed it felt it sink me back into my sit. It raced thru a few gears and up-shifted silky smooth. The car never ran that good since I have owned it. I bet I got a good deal because the previous owner was noticing the effects of a bad MAF sensor want to get rid of it.

Was the part number of the new MAF different, or did you have a 2002+ ?

I have similar pinging, sluggishness, and jerky shifting at times. All in addition to 1/2 a liter of transmission fluid getting up and dissapearing in the last 4 months..

this might sound ghey but next to the dealer is a road called General Hutchinson Parkway and there is a park called Big Tree park. I stoped there last week end saw the big tree. it is a 3500 year old cyprus tree. I stood there for two minutes and just kept saying it must be 20 feet wide and 175 high. its free and worth the 2 minutes it takes to park and walk down the path.

also when I was a kid we called it General Hutchinson Raceway because it is long straight and had no where for cops to hide.

seahunter, did you have to flash (reprogram) your ECU at the dealer after the swap?

Thanks for sharing your story, but there has been a MILLION and one posts about bad MAF and oxygen sensors.

MrPoisse- You don't need to (reprogram) your ECU if you change your MAF. Your ecu will automatically get used to the new MAF. Many ppl do it but it's a waste of money.

I went to advance autoparts and had them clear the MIL and that was it. before the MIL was cleared it was already running great.

Reprograming the ECU is needed, I have gone through 5 MAFs and did the ECU reprogram after repleacing my last one about 2 months later. Gas mileage went up, throttle response went up, midrange feels alot better. Internal resistance of the MAF is different between the old style one and the new one, and the ECU don't know this.

Guy also , the guy sold you the wrong one..... The new MAFS for 2k0,2k1 will not work in a 2k2,2k3 MAx. Even if you try to reprogram it...Nissan updated the MAFS for the 5th generation maxes. I think they caught on to people just buying the 100 dollar one and changing the thernisit module and slapping the MAFS back in there car. You do know the one for our car cost 488 new, right? My best advice for you is to try to find a late 02 or and 03 max in the salvage yard and pick up a AM600 MAFS. These are the sturdier ones for our cars, the one that came in your 02 is probally the old MAFS, like mine..... i was affortunate to find one in the junk yard for 150 bucks....

Yes , but ask yourself this, when is the last time you did a tune up on your car? If you have had a tune up within the last year , then ithink its fair to say its your MAFS. But if you haven't then get yourself a tune up , if it still responds sluggishly after your tune up, then its the MAFS.
