So much bullsh*t. Only 4th gens will reset themselves after 300 miles, but there is a way around that with the Consult tool though. The ECM will reset if you use bad gas or try to advance past a certain point.

This is *literally* a 5 minute job. The service tech gets inside your car, revs it for a little, drives it around the block, brings it back, parks, revs a little again and adjusts. And that's it! There is nothing else that has to be done. Try to be sly, come up to a service tech, ask him for 5 minutes of time and slip him a 20. I thankfully didn't have to go through this, my service tech is flat out the f*ckin man.

OK i just went to the Nisssan Dealership, I spoke to a guy i know at the front desk and asked him about Advance Timing, he said they Can not do it because it is a modification. So i leave the front desk and go talk to one of the nissan mechanics i know, to ask him for more information about advance timing, i told him i wanted another +2 Degrees, so he says ok ill be right back, so he goes gets the consult system plugs it in and does it for me,he gives me the print out of the specs that he changed and now i have it at 17.. he said if i wanted to change it to +4 degrees that i might not be able to pass smog. He made My day!!!!!!

I might have to do this....are there any gains from this? Anyone Dyno?
I use 93 Octane all the time so uping the timing should be fine for me.

While I dunno' of any dyno info, many people have told me each degree is worth 5HP. So when you're doing a +2 advance, you're obviously getting 10 ponies to the wheels. This is a great "mod" for us 5th gen folk who are envious of the larger 3.5 on the 02/3s.

I'm deffinatly going to go talk to a guy tomorrow. He comes into my work all the time and asks me how my car is. He seems nice so i'm sure he'll help me work something out. The way you describe the benefit of this makes me very envious.

Two hours?!? Man, that would be taking you to the cleaners. Find another dealer, like Ice said it's a fast job.

BTW, I found the power difference to be significant - I can't punch it in first gear without the tires spinning on dry pavement (we're not talking smoke at 4k, but the tires are definitely scrabbling ). Definitely recommend this mod, zero bad effects and no problem running at 91 octane during a road trip out of town.

blizzzummpp lets get more info.. I read on the Miata forums that they all increase thier timing to 17 degrees and still run 87 octane. but they have a lower compression engine than we do.. so i think ill shop around for a cheap place to do it in tampa

I've had my timing at 20 deg, but I backed it down to 18 for now and I'm fairly happy with it. I have been runing advanced timing on my car for almost 4 years now, I don't know why people just found out bout this. I can hook ya guys up with timing bumps here in IL, for the locals, very small fee- 20 bux. I have found out I gained 8WHP from 2 deg of timing advance, and 9lbs of TQ in the midrange. Anything past 18 is useless as I found out on the dyno, my butt dyno felt the engine more responsive at 20, but it acutally showed less power at top end.

It's not new Mike, just newbs bring up a topic from the grave.

Anyways, what is new is that you've successfully advanced to 20-degrees. Any chance you got or have a Consult print out of that? People have said they bumped it up to 20 or beyond, however it wouldn't stick, ie everytime they disconnected it went back to 17 or so.

You can't go past 19 deg with the idle learn procedure, cause it gives you extra 2 deg on top of the normal +2 deg of advancing in the timing menu. I have disconnected my battery once for a clutch job and my timing still stayed at 18 deg. I think people who have issues with ECUs reseting back to normal is the 00> cars, they use the older OBDII system. Where 01 ECUs are VERY similar to the 02 cars'. I will try to take a picture of my Consult as I ran out of printer paper I noticed that quite a few Maximas had their timing set at 13 deg from the factory, this would explain why few Maximas make less power than other "factory freaks". Bumping the timing to 18 deg on a car that 13 deg makes a bigger butt dyno diff than adding a Ypipe !

Cool...please do. I know at least one person posted up their Consult printout of 17-degrees.

Yeah, mine sits at 14-degrees sometimes and then 15-degrees other times per my OBD scanner. I've heard of many others sitting at 14-degrees from the factory, but I'd bet if it's at 13-degrees or less, it was because a tech was trying to squelch some customers complaint about pinging due to the coil issues.

13->17 degrees should make a hell of a difference, at least for autos.

Do you know if your car ever had the timing played with before, ie pinging problems due to coils the tech tried to bandaid?

When I did my Advance timing today, It literally took 5 min to do! I even watched him do it on the Consult, and i couldnt believe how fast it took. It put a smile on my face when he finished and printed out the paper for me.. I feel a difference somewhere on the car but i cant find what areas of the rpm band. I like it, i can feel a diffence but i dont know if its mentally. I believe when the car shifts it picks up faster, and has less laggg when changing gears. I feel like the rpms dont drop as much when it shifts, and feels like it shifts faster, more responsive, i havent tried it on the freeway yet, but tomorow i will.. But its hard to comment on how much performance it may gain, but i do feel a difference. Does someone know what i am talking about......

the only place you are likely to feel a difference is in low to mid rpms. there should not be much a gain over say 4k. when i had it done a while back, i felt as the car could get up to speed with less effort than before.

Alex Peppers...OBD tool. There are lots of OBD scanners, so I'd look at all.

After 2000rpm the ECU advances beyond 20-degrees, so I argue there is no difference besides just puching out of the hole to <2000rpm.

Theres some pretty smart guys in here so maybe one of yall can answer my question. Im wandering if its possible to advance the timing on a 6th gen? I have heard SR20DEN say that he didnt think so but I still have not found a for sure answer. I figured someone who works at the dealership could tell me since they work on all nissans. Thanks

If I could get my hands on one, I would. Do only nissan techs have these? Because it seems like ive heard a local tuner might have one. I dunno, just curious if these are offered to the pubic for purchase.

I would look in the phone book for shops that specialize on Nissans or Japanese Imports. That is going to be my first step.

Nope. Never had issues with pinging before. And the timing did make a hell of a difference. I noticed it instantly and made various threads about it on NYCMax.

Auto Reset?

I was at the dealership today and asked the service manager about this. He then asked one of the techs and they said that when the car is started for the first time after advancing the timing it would automatically reset to the factory setting, which I think is 15 deg. The service manager said that if I bring in a procedure, he would run it by the tech again and possibly have it done. Can anyone send me a procedure that the dealership could follow? Is there anything that states that the timing will not be reset upon start-up?

Thanks for the help.

If it's any good info, I will be dynoing this "mod" soon. I will run a mix of 101 and 90, for for the guy that stated 5 hp/degree thats a total of 191 octane ...

Time frame looks like 2 wks, initially I got into a fight with the tech because he told me no matter how long it takes ( < hr) he will still have to charge me an hr.

nope. i tested that a little over a year ago. i went back to the place with the consult after it had been unplugged all weekend and it was still there. close to a year and a half later, my harrison obd software says the timing is still there.
