Damn! I'm driving down the 5 freeway in Glendale heading Southbound towards LA when the car in front of me passes over some fairly good sized pieces of wood. I figure, no big deal. He'll pass over the wood pieces and so will I. But that's not quite how it goes.
As he rolls over the pieces, one of them becomes airborne and comes straight at me. Fortunately, it presents its full length to me rather than coming at me end first. I have absolutely NO time to react. If I try to dodge the wood or slam on my brakes, I could be toast. So I decide to hang on and take the hit.
Bang! Sounds like somebody hit my Maxima with a baseball bat near the upper front corner of the driver's side door. Then I'm past it and I'm driving down the freeway like nothing happened.
When I get home, I get of my car and take a look. Sure enough, I've got a good sized dent in the upper door frame above the driver's side window. I check it out carefully. Any damage to the roof? No. Any damage to the front, side or rear of the car? No. Just this nasty looking dent in the door frame, a slight tear in the door molding, and a wee dent in the windshield molding.
How much to fix all that? $600 to $700. How long to fix it? 4 full days. Who pays for all this? My insurance company. It's covered under my comprehensive coverage. So I'm out of pocket $100.
Really sucks. But it could have been a whole lot worse.

I feel your pain
I was on I-66 once, and some truck ran over this metal bar and it came flying at me, and it made a LOUD thump up against the front of the car. When I pull off into this shopping center to check out what happened, the right part of the front bumber was cracked! Insuance covered it, and it only cost me $100 to get it repaired. Still sucks though.

heh where do you live
Dam that's all out your pocket? just 100 bucks.
I messed up my car fwe weeks ago. Rear driver side door was hit. My damage was like $1700 at this autobody place where they so called "specialize" in Euro car repairs(benzo's jags, ferrari's), Maybe they gave me that ridiculous price because they didnt want my business.
I took it to a local not so popular shop, it was 600 to fix the door and might as well fix the fender also for another 300 dollars. The car is beautiful now. They used better paint than nissan did to do the repairs.
ANyway , what i was getting it is that yeah it sucks to get hit or to see our cars hurt.
and that my insurance deductible is $2,000 dollars. That means that i have to pay the first $2,000 dollars of damage for you all that dont understand. So basically i just have this insurance on my car because it is required by law i guess. New Jersey sucks.

birds with depression
I had a bird flied straight toward my windshield when I was driving 80mph on 101 north in my old car...bet it is flying 30 - 40mph...no way to react, no way to dodge it....
yup a 100mph impact left a crack and a freshy red mark on my windshield.
birds do suffer from depression
and some of them are suicidal.

I know how much that sucks because I just went through the same thing. Except, someone actually hit my car with something. My insurance covered it under comprehensive so there was only a $100 deductible. The repair itself was around $500. If it had been covered under collision, my deductible would have been $500.. good thing the body shop considered it vandalism and not a hit-n-run. When the car was repaired, it looked like new.. I've closely examined the repaired area on a few occasions, and I honestly can't tell it was ever damaged.
Good luck with your repair!

Thanks for all your good wishes, guys. I'll take my car to the body shop a week from Monday. Turns out that Nissan wants to inspect my bumper again to try to figure out why I got scratches after the new bumper clips were installed. The bumper will need to be replaced or repainted regardless of whatever Nissan comes up with in the way of a fix. So I might as well get as much done at one time as I can.
