ignition problem, confused.

i just ran up to 7-eleven and when i got back in my car the MIL came on. i plugged in my obd2 reader and pulled p0302 and p1320. i know the 302 code is misfire in 5th cylinder, but the 1320 is not in my book. i searched google and found a site that says "ignition system".

when i was driving home the MIL flashed for a few seconds for reasons i cant figure out.

what do you guys think the problem is?
what EXACTLY does 1320 mean?

Code 1320 is the dreaded ignition coils....you must replace them all. Costs seem to range $600-900. I paid $800 last month. Maybe the light blinks because you have 2 codes? I'm not sure.

Write a letter to Nissan North America complaining about the ignition coil issue... PM me and I'll send you a copy of the letter I sent... I'm determined Nissan recalls these damn ignition coils.

Oh, and how many miles do you have on the max?

It's the misfire thats causing the SES to blink.

cost should not be that high. you can get all 6 brand new nissan parts for around 300 shipped. check jerryromenissan.com or call dave burnette at 888-254-6060. the coils are very simple to replace. just a matter of undoing a few bolts and the connector. if you dont have the cash to drop on all 6, you can unplug them until the condition does not change and you know that is the bad one.

thanks for all your responses. today something interesting happened. i can actually feel the misfire imbalance in the stick and sometimes in the seat when stopped. it only happens sometimes and seems to go in series. i will feel it for like five miutes and them not feel it at all for like five minutes. i cant figure this out but i am actually thinking that there is a lose connection, could that through a code?

i have 82k miles.

if the connector to the coil is damaged or loose then it could cause a misfire.

I think I had a similar problem where #5 came on and another code (ignition system) came on too. What I did was replace coil #5 and reset the light. It worked.

500 miles and no CEL.

Should work for you too. If it doesnt, heres some things to check out. See if the wiring harness is giving power. Check the Crankshaft sensors.

Goodluck

i would like to do that but from what i understand you have to replace all of them. or at least nissan dealers do. i have an extended warantee that covers coils and has only a $100 deductable. so if i can get them all replaced for $100 then i would like to. the thing is i have to move back to chicago next week and i am afraid i will damage the engine. by the way there are no nissan dealers within 40 miles of where i live right now.

you are not going to damage the car with a misfire, it is not just not running properly. obviously, it is not something you want to put off for a long time. imagine needing the power to merge and you are running on 5 or less cylinders. you can just replace the failed coil instead of all 6 but because of your warranty, i would take it in to have them all replaced which nissan typically does.

With the misfiring cylinder there would be raw fuel going through the exhaust, this could melt the cat down.

doesnt the computer cut the fuel to a misfire. if not it really should. actually i was going to ask about that cause i got out of my car today and smelled gas.

coil or coils bad. Misfire. Feels like something is out of balance. The light will flash meaning keep up the gas and damage will occur to cats. Basically telling you to cool it on the gas because something is really wrong. I think that's probably also why we have so many problems with the precat and O2 sensor issues. Extra gas gets dumped into exhaust when a misfire happens and over time and enough misfires, the precats get burned out.

I did over 10,000 miles with a bad coil. Maybe I just got lucky that nothing else broke. I just never got a code until recently. I changed the bad coil, now I've put 1000 miles on it and everything is fine.

Most people say that you should replace all the coils, but changing only one has worked for me.

For your warranty, the stealership might try and say that nothing is wrong or "we could not duplicate the problem" they try and screw you. You should buy a multi-meter ($20) and check the coils yourself. They should read infinit ohm.

i have never had good luck with resistace testing, but i suppose i could give it a shot. when the check engine light is on wont they pretty much try and replace whatever it could be to screw you? the coil is bad there is no doubt about it.
