HLSD Maintenance needed?

I have an '02 Maxima w/ 6-spd and HLSD (Helical Limited Slip Differential).

Does the HLSD need to be serviced?

Maybe replace the oil?

If so how often?

How much have you been charged for this service?

Is the HLSD unit in the manual transmission?

If HLSD is w/ manual tranny then changing the manual transmission fluid changes the HLSD?

(Sorry, but I am a rookie in auto repair)

Is this a no-brainier as a home repair, or go to dealer as not worth hassle?

(I have done radiator flush and fill, spark plug and oil changes to give you an idea of my competency)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Regards,

SpottyJ

The diff is part of the tranny. They share the same fluid.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I ask is that the replacemnt of the Limited Slip fluid is listed seperatly, and at a differnt interval than the manual transmission.

See link for the service reccomendations at 30K. Again, thanks for the reply. I am just a little confused.

Select the 30K option from the pulldown:

Nissan Online Maintenance Schedule

Thanks

Thread bump... thanks.

I am still not sure why the service for Limited Slip Differential is on a different schedule from the Manual Transmission if they share the same fluid. The Limited Slip Differential is listed right before the manual transmission service.

Bottom line, tomorrow (Wednesday) I am going to dealer for some service and I want to make sure I understand what I need/don't need.

THANKS

Still need some advice...please!

Last bump... I would appreciate some advice

(Thank you to "itdood", but, I am still confused.)

On my truck (I know different vehicle) the differential is not integrated with the Tranny fluid.

THANKS

the fsm doesn't show a procedure for servicing the hsld. i have looked through it 3 times and found nothing other than the diagrams. i just recently put some redline mt-90 in there and haven't had any problems.

i think the servicing at 30K is just another way for the dealer to make money.

IIRC, someone had this same question in the fluids forum a couple of years back. It seems that Nissan missed a footnote on that item. Basically, If your difterential has a separate case, i.e., a RWD or AWD, then there's the need for be a separate schedule. However, the LSD in our cars (well, I wish on mine) is in the same transmisson case, so the argument is moot.

I run MT-90 on mine, it's better but the shifts are still notchy.

Well I went to dealer and Service Writer insisted it was a seperate service for replacing the HLSD fluid from the manual tranny. I asked the service writer to check with a mechanic, mechanic verified what was siad here - they share the same fluid. Thanks for the info, if I was not informed I am pretty sure the dealer would have billed me for for both services.

Information is power (and those ***** hate the internet). I wonder how many unsuspecting, trusting people, in their ignorance, get taken to the cleaners. Glad it worked out for you.

Hey, one more question, this "stealership" wants $125 for a manual transmission drain, I agreed and left. I later called two other dealerships and they quoted $75 for the same service.

What are your pricing experiences for a manual transmission service?

changing the tranny fluid will take you no more that 1 hour (taking your time) and the cost of the tranny fluid and funnel + hose. plus you will learn how to do it yourself.

here is the link

housecor's writeup

very, very, very easy to do.

edit: AIM me if you have any questions

Thanks for all the help, in particular the link to how you do it your self.

I picked up the Max today. Bottomline was $69 for M/T drain and fill.

For about a third of what you paid, you could have gotten the Redline MT-90

That's an exageration. It's closer to two thirds.

EDIT: Daim, you are right Rey, it is closer to half, esp. with the coupon. Take it back.

It's a shame most service advisors don't know jack about servicing cars. If it was up to me I would speak to the customer directly, but it isn;t.

The HLSD sould be "Serviced" at normal manual tranny service intervals, cant remember off hand. All it is is a drain and fill. Any dealer that charges more than 1/2 labor are crooks.

Thanks for the reply, are you saying the HLSD is a separate sevice from drain/fill the manual transmission?

on paper it is a separate service

15K it says to drain and fill HLSD
30K it says to drain and fill tranny

why is there is no drain and fill at 30K for HLSD??? just another way for them to get your money.
