Since search is down..repost...Motor Oil recommendations?

After running through 15 pages of this forum and doing CTRL+F for "oil", I have resorted to posting this question that has probably been posted a million times.

I want to see what the opinion of the forum is for a 2002 SE with 93K on it regarding motor oil. I am thinking GTX Synthetic but wanted to find out before changing it. Sorry for the repost but couldn't find this after searching for a while.

Side note: If the mods need some help from a DBA with lowering the overhead of the search function on the server, let me know.

There is only one oil to rule the world. Mobil1 synthetic.

Btw, the search function is not down, it currently only works for donating members. Instructions for how to search the .Org using Google and Yahoo are in the Stickies...

Also, the FAQs in the Fluids and Lubricants forum will have answers to your question...

And yeah, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic too...

I use Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5w30 for both my Maxima and my Sentra. I recommend it because it's a great synthetic oil, and because it is easily available almost anywhere (even Walmart carries it, and their price is probably one of the best).

There are other excellent options, but they may not be as easy to find in all parts of the nation. The fully synthetic oils from Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Redline are a few you might want to check.

Btw since ya mentioned Royal Purple, this is from the FAQs in the F&L forum:

* Royal Purple Oil (thins in viscosity relatively quickly and too expensive considering there are other synthetic oils that do not thin as fast that are less expensive)

NOTE: These oils will protect fine up to 3,000 miles, they just don't represent a good value based upon their additive package and/or their oil analysis reports for Maxima-specific engines. It does not mean they "suck".
Not that I have anything against it, and it is one opinion, but I just thought I'd add the footnote...

Synthetic is always the best. Mobil 1 or Castrol is the most common and good. Stay away from Valvoline.

I put in conventional. I've moved to Jersey (formerly NYC) where there is less stress on the car. I dont really drive as hard as I used to either. Must be getting old.

If your drives are primarily with a lot of stress on the car (ie. Stop & GO, racing) use synthetic. If not, conventional is just fine.

Also stay away from the Fram filters, they suck. The best are the Mobil, or stock filters. Purulator is an okay filter too. The premium Purulator restricts oil too much so just buy the regular one.

Yeah, I don't use Royal Purple myself. I just didn't want to make it sound like Mobil was the only choice out there. I use Mobil myself, because (like I said) it's a great oil at a great price compared to other synthetics. That FAQ excerpt seems to support the idea that some other synthetics (specifically Royal Purple in this case) cost much more and offer less protection beyond 3,000 miles.

I try to replace my Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles, I have let it go as long as 7,000 miles with no problems in my Sentra, and I know people who have let it go even longer (up to 10,000 miles) with FILTER changes every 3,000 miles. I don't recommend going that long without an oil change, but Mobil 1 seems to be good for extended protection. You certainly don't have to stick religiously to the 3,000 mile rule with Mobil 1.

My VQ loves the Amsoil ASL 5W-30 fully PAO synthetic oil. Castrol Syntec is Hydrocracked Synthetic, not PAO (true synthetic) where M1 is fully PAO. Amsoil flows better at lower temperatures which is nice when it's too cold and keeps it's viscocity throughtout the life of the oil which is 25,000 miles. I do change my oil once a year (about 10,000 miles) and change the filter once every six months.
