Shifting problem

Hay everyone. I have a problem when my car is being floored from first gear to second there is a big delay. The car feel like it take a good few seconds before it changes gears. I have no idea if the tranny fluid has ever been changed because i bought the car used. Im not sure if i should maybe change the fluid to get quicker shifts or even get my VB upgraded and changing my tranny silionoids. Anyone here have or even had this problem. If so how did you get it fixed. Im really in a bind right now and am not too sure on what to do.
