i went to my dealership today and asked if they would advance my timing for me and they said the same thing, that they wouldn't do it becase it's not within spec. he then asked why i wanted it done and after i told him, he had the nerve to ask "why don't you just get a chip?"(which, as far as i know, isn't even an option). So, it's ok to get a chip, but they won't advance my timing 2 degrees. gotta love the dealership.

I want to thank all you guys who posted in this thread. I got my 03 advanced to 17 deg on Saturday, and I am loving it. For some reason my car was at 14 deg so I definitely notice a difference. I noticed a bit more power passing people on the highway, say from 70-85mph, it seemed like it took a lot less effort. Also, while cruising at 80mph I checked the mpg and it said 24.7. That's pretty damn good. Now, it all could be in my head, but nevertheless it is still a cheap, easy mod to do to get a bit more power from our engines.

I finally got mine done last week. I do notice a slight improvement in low end - the motor just feels smoother and seems to pull a little better. The best part is the noticable (3-4 mpg so far) increase in gas mileage.
On the other hand, I will never recommend my dealer for anything - not even a flipping tire rotation. They wound up charging me $89, and this was after I had to fight with the service manager to get it done. Of course, this was the same d&#khead who tried to rip me off on the brake and coil TSB 2 years ago, so I shouldn't be surprised.
In case anyone's wondering, the dealer is Hilltop, in East Hanover, NJ.

Ask yourself this question- is the 2-5 dollars CHEAPER per gas tank worth the price of a new engine ?
I can't belive people buy performance parts or what not for their car but skip on the gas to save a few cents.

i have to admit. once i got past the initial temptation to floor it at every opportunity, the best part of this "mod" is probably the better gas mileage. i've gotten almost an extra 40 miles to a full tank under normal driving conditions. my timing is at 18 and i use 93 only.
i wonder if others have gotten the same improvement?

Ive called all the Nissan Dealers around me, 3 of them, and only 1 said that they can actually perform the the advancement. The service manager said that he has not had anyone ask him to do it so he had to do some researching to give me a solid answer of whether or not he could do it. He said it would be $75 and some change for 0.5 to 1.0 hours of labor. Ive read that it literally take a few minutes, but he said that they would check on the idle and other things as well. Well see. So, is the $75 a rip?....i really dont want to pay that much, but I really want this done. I thought I read on a few pages back that someone had it done for $45 or so....that sounds more like it to me. Also, while Im there, is there anything else I should have checked or reset?...I havent had any of the TSBs performed, but I also havent been having any of the TSB symptoms. Sorry for the babbling, but I wanna be sure and confidant I know what Im taking about.

It's quite literally just a few keystrokes on the Consult II, but they should do the idle speed adjustment at the same time, apparently. My dealer is a snake, but I wanted the mod, so I paid. I'll trash him on the customer service report, if only because he told me it couldn't be done, and I had to get the directions to prove him wrong.
You have to decide if the $75 is worth it. In my book, it is. The car runs smoother, pulls a little stronger, and gas mileage is improved. It might be my head playing tricks, but the car just feels stronger, particularly at highway speeds.

Is there way to test that timing has actually been advanced for you by the dealer???
I asked them to do it, while had my car for that 100-point Free inspection. Had to pay an hour of labor for it, but i wanted to do it. Car is smoother, but still sluggish. I am suspecting other things..
But is there a way to connect it to Autozone scanner, and check the timing?

Timing gun is NOT going to help you here, unless its a dial back timing light- then maybe. There are no actuall timing marks on the pulley on distributor equipped cars. I know there is a TDC mark on the pulley, but thats bout it.
