Need Help Grinding noise when I start.

Hey guys hoping someone can help me out with this: Everytime I start the car after about 2 or more hour intervals, I get this grinding/Whining sound right after my engine turns and gets started. While I am driving I don't here nothing regardless of what RPM I am at, only when I start the car. have about 120000 MILES on 00 SE. Also just wanted to say thank you to all the members with all this awesome info on the Max's. Going through this I was able to change my MAF sensor, my coils and my spark plugs. Feel like I can do any work on the car, just have to look around at the org.

Jake.

Havent tried to do that yet, will ask my roommate to help me out. I feel like its the starter or something, since it never happens when I am driving.

the starter has an automatic shutoff that kills it once the engine is on. Sounds like yours is not shutting off correctly. This may be a problem with the starter or the starter solenoid.

if you want to test to see if that indeed is where the sound is coming from, turn on the car....now, while it's running, turn the key real quick to the start position (just for a split second) and see if that is the sound you are hearing. It sounds bad, but won't hurt anything that isn't already hurt...

If so, have your starter or solenoid checked/replaced.

not sure....first make sure that's what it is....

if it's a bad solenoid, those cost maybe 10-20 bucks and you can install easily....starter will cost more and be a little more difficult....I'd try the solenoid first, since it won't cost you much.....

It's a bad starter. The grease inside get old and dry and cause's the starter drive to hang.

only thing I can think of is starter not disengaging after start up and/or timing chain from lack of lubrication from the vehicle sitting
