How do they measure car interiors?

Can someone please provide me with a reference for how interior space is measured....by that, I mean, "What are the reference points?"

For example, front headroom: do they measure from the center of the seat to the top of the roof, or from the back of the seat?

Hip room: Do they measure from the edge of one door to the edge of the other door at a given distance up from the seat cushion?

Are these maximum values, or averaged values?

I am trying to compare Maximas versus other makes.

Suggestion: Instead of doing all your measurments in a scientific approach, why not do some leg work and actually see the cars, feel it, sit in it. If you're more worried about "interior space," buy an SUV. Comparing a Maxima to a (ex.) Taurus, IMO the Max has more "interior space." Then again, what's interior space if there's no power to move it? The Maxima offers these and more.

Its listed in the general specs of the car....00-03s have 102.7 cu-ft of interior vol. Id venture to say a 4th gen is around 95.

Fanatic is right on that one, the April 1991 Issue of CR has it, unfortunately the online databases only carry the past 4-5 years so you're going to have to goto a library or something.

Gosh...I'm impressed you remembered that!

I can't even remember who was Playmate of the Month for April of this year!
