you can open 02/03 tails!!!

Ok so i messed up one of my tails pretty bad last week trying to do the all red tails but i didnt want to just suck it up and take the loss. So i borrowed my buddy’s heat gun and this afternoon went about trying to get this thing open. Well after about an hour or so of heating and prying with a screwdriver i got the lens off. The glue that they use to seal these is very stubborn but these lights can be opened. I did crack the lens on the passenger side in one place pretty bad but i think that it was because i was rushing a little... i did get the drivers side off with no problems though... i will take pics sometime tomorrow if anyone wants to see...

And how you planning on closing them? they would leak and after you apply another cote of glue on the glass it would be noticeable and even though it's clear when it dries it still would show because I tried it the same way.

As it was mentioned...closing them and sealing them is the issue now. Original 5th gen lights (both SE and standard) shouldn't be a problem because they aren't clear. But the 02/03 tails, that's another story...

another thing I'd be worried about is since they've been heated so long, is the chance of severely warping the taillight.

i thought about that but i dont have an oven b/c im at school so that was out... but the glue on the light is pretty strong so i dont know if that would work it took a good effort to break the seal with a heat gun. i also messed up the passenger side real bad the lens cracks really easy so you have to be careful

I too have to try and either open my 02 lights because I have a fly in there. Don't know how it got there and I hope it wasn't put there as a joke when the car was assembled. I picked mine up used early last year and noticed it in the fall.

Many of the cars have a bug in the tail light. I also have one and so do others.

stock 2k2k style didn't open after i tried to open them. first started from 200*- 400* and the glue didn't melt at all. when the lense is hot it's really easy to brake it.

ok heres some pics of the passenger side light as you can see the i did crack the lense pretty bad but was able to get the housing out this light was the one i tested everything on so it looks pretty messed up. when i opened the light up it looked like there was no glue in them at all but that the two peices of plastic were actually melted together i could be wrong but thats what it looked like. i am still working on the drivers side and will post pics of that once i finish.

I have a spider in mine. I think it crawled in there to eat the fly and got stuck.

no the clear plastic lens that covers the light is all one peice so it cant be dremmeld out or anything and if you look a little closer at the pics you will notice that the whole side is chiped up and there is another smaller crack near the top.

if anyone has an extra passenger side light or set of lights either in good condition or not that they want to sell i would be willing to buy it if the price was right.

Sorry to hear about the lights , it's good to know that it actually works with a heating gun. I think it would look gorgeous with blue and clear on it but thats just with my color car. not sure how it would look on yours.

... then again blue is illegal and i would probably get pulled over like crazy.

just a thought...if you use some of the same clear aquarium silcone sealant that they tell you to use with the DDE kit, it may not be such a big problem to reseal them. dunno if the old glue would prove to be a problem though...

great job by the way \m/

i was thinking of painting the housing body color and then the lens for the light all red i think that would look really good!

I had taken apart mine. When you paint the amber piece seperate it comes out way better. You can't even tell it was amber. I have stock bulbs and it looks complete red when lit. 3 coats of transparent red.

Quick Reply: you can open 02/03 tails!!!
