The benifits of a intercooler?

What are they? And what kind of job and cost is it to put one in? I'm thinking of installing one in my 2002 Max, but was wondering if I'd be biting off more then I can chew..

I put 2 intercoolers on my car, One for hte intake and one for the exhaust. I had to remove the radiator to make it fit though. But the 50hp gains were worth it.

I decided to install mine in the trunk. It's only 45 HP instead of 50, but the bass is great!

Thanks for answering the quesion... The rest of you ****** that have been here for 10 years and feel like answering a question that were anwsered 4 years ago, is pointless can kiss my ***.

This board, I thought, was designed as a resource for people looking for help? Apparently it also doubles as a clubhouse for elitist *******s that feel like answering question for people with a post count under 200 isn't worth doing.

yeah nice help org. way to welcome a newbie.

definition of a newbie => in this case, someone who would like to learn how an intercooler works and the benefits it has towards our cars. in other cases, someone who is willing to learn more about their car, hence no longer being a newbie.

or we could flame him and tell him how the search function works.

i think answering this question in one sentence initially instead of prolonging this thread to be worthless ranting and raving about how superior your knowledge is to the rest of us would have been more beneficial.

perhaps?

oh yeah before i forget. welcome to the org!

The question was not simply "what is an intercooler?"
It was followed by the statement, "I'm think of installing one in my 2002 Max"

That's like me asking "what is an **** plug? I'm thinking of getting one for my girlfriend."

I'm sorry, but that deserves just a hint of ridicule, but it's all good natured.

Hint for the future, google is your friend.

oh yeah, big tip so that this doesn't happen again.

try finding it in the various sections of the site or searching for it on a search engine.

i try to search as much as i can before i ask about a topic, just so nothing like this could happen and make me feel real nice.

Installing the intercooler is easy. You can do it yourself, if you know the LEAST bit about how cars work. The benefits of an intercooler WITHOUT a turbo is to make your car look "cool" and "fast"! The children (1st graders) around town that know what an intercooler is, will respect and fear you. I say, go ahead and do it.

I have a intercooler FOR my Max, its a dual core Blackstone bar n plate- and yes my Maxima is going to be turbo shortly. I'm in process of buying another project car, and I need to finish the Max off before I spend 5K on the engine buildup of the new car

honestly, i usually ignore most of the repe***ive stupidity that gets thrown on to the board. that, my fellow forum members, is self control at it's finest. sometimes i need to break someone off with a response just awful enough to give myself a breath of fresh air. the target or thread starter in this case, may not be deserving of such a reply. you are all correct in that regard. dave, it wasn't personal, i do not think less of you for inquiring, and i hope you learned something about intercoolers from these more helpful folks.

intercooler is used to reduce the temperature of charged air in a forced induction system. gases exit the compressor side of the turbo and are ran through the end tank and core (bar and plate or tube and fin) then out the other side of an intercooler. that air has dropped in degrees from its previous state and is then moved through the throttle and intake manifold, back into the engine and then turbo. repeat.

How ironic *******, I didn't find out how stupid the question was until I asked. And yeah, I tried the search function, but sadly I don't have 5 hours to spend searching, waiting for pages to load, then search again. And yeah, I would've used google, but I thought maybe, just maybe I might get a better response/description in relation to my Maxima here. How foolish of me..

For the record, I wouldn't get a intercooler without a turbo, and the reason I asked int he first place was because a Max on ebay had a intercooler and in the description it said the "Intercooler helps the car preform better, and last longer.". Apparently I'm not the only idiot new to Maximas and this board.

Further more, any 1st graders, including yourself poster posting that comment that would care to enlighten me on whatever else I might have missed in pre-K, let me know.

5 hours of researching?? Come on. You could have found out what an intercooler was in about 2 minutes, on just about any automobile information site on the net.

The key word there -- EBAY.

We won't know until you ask....so up until that point, I would suggest spending some time in the stickies.

I'm betting that part of the confusion is that the ebay max may not have an intercooler, but a TRANNY cooler, which helps to cool the automatic transmission, and helps IT last longer. It looks like a small intercooler.

That said, i will (as usual) play devil's advocate to all the flamers here and bring up the point that an intercooler could, IN THEORY, have positive effects on a non-FI car as well. They would be minor, but you could THEORETICALLY rig an intercooler to a CAI for "cooler" intake air. That said, it would have the negative effect of restricting airflow, possibly.

NOTE: I'm not saying that because I think it's an idea worth exploring, or an idea that will work...I'm just throwing out a hair=brained idea rather than being a ******* and just flaming..

Yeah, I know, I do my share of flaming....but I just got back from a week in St.Maarten, so I'm relaxed and in a good mood

bro sometimes i dont know what poeple ask on here means, but just try to do a little homework before you ask, if you have no general knowlege about cars you probably shouldnt be modding it, just for safety reasons.

An intercooler is out of the question obviously. but you could do stuff like an Intake, Exhaust, Tranny cooler, Drop Resistor (search this - auto only) these are things you could probably handel.

Just learn a little more about cars before you ask some questions

DAVE2112, an intercooler is for a turbo-charged or supercharged car. The hot intake air from the turbo/sc is cooled by the intercooler. A pipe coming off the turbo/sc is connected to the intercooler, the intercooler has another pipe that then connects to the throttle body. Most aftermarket intercoolers mount just in front of the radiator, so cold air can blast on it to cool the air going into the motor. What happens is when you compress air (such as in a turbo/sc set-up), the air begins to heat up (also in a turbo, you are using hot exhaust gases to spin the turbo). The colder the intake charge, the more power that can be made. An intercooler acts the same way that your radiator works in the sense that it is used to cool down the air going into it, where as your radiator cools down the water passing through your engine. Figured I'd give you a no bullsh*t answer because everyone else was busting your b*lls. Welcome.

If the thread starter doesn't want to take the time to do a little research on his own why should members take the time/energy to give him a real answer?
