02 Maxima Burning Oil

I have a buddy that has an 02 Max. He just bought it about 2 months ago. It has 70,000 miles on it. The thing uses about a quart of oil every 500 miles. It doesn't puff blue smoke when you start it up and the engine is dry underneath and it doesn't blow smoke when you drive it or get on it. There is no oil residue on the rear bumper either. When it warms up, at idle it sounds sort of "dieselish". Short of doing a compression test, have any of you had this problem, and if so, what was the diagnosis?

I just noticed i was a quart down on oil after 2000 miles. I called my dealership and I guess the nissan spec is 1 qt per 1500 miles is within spec. I am not very thrilled with this.

PS mobil synthetic 5w30
55,000 mi

From: Auburn WA,
I have the same problem with my 02! 2500 miles between oil change and I lost 3 qts of syntec, No leaks or smoke, runs great. It's probly because of the way I drive it though (always mashing)
