Winding sound

I started driving to work this morning and noticed a winding sound that started slowly and became higher pitched at higher speeds. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side front wheel well. I don't think it is the tranny because it came in all gears, even neutral. The strange thing is that after I was on the expressway for a minute or so and got to an intersection off of the expressway, the sound was completely gone. Maybe something got warmed up and stopped the sound, I don't know.

Any ideas?

Why is it that the sound is gone now?
